Hi. My lovely warmblood is going to the vets on Friday for another course of Tildren - this will be his third and final one during this claim. Although he's had no problems with the other two times I am for some reason a bit worried about him this time. I think it was after reading about that famous horse in Horse & Hound last week that died following the quinidine he was given. It was weird because it was his sixth and final one that killed him. I don't blame his owners for giving him the drug, but it has made me think about the safety aspect of giving drugs to horses. I know the risk of heart attack is very small especially if Tildren is infused very slowly which is what my vet always does but I just cant help wondering if I am doing the right thing especially as Bailey has second degree heart block which is a kind of arrythmia and Tildren can (very rarely) cause a fatal heart attack in horses with this condition. Am I just being silly? I've given up smoking (today is day 12) and I am feeling a bit stressed anyway, maybe I am stressing for no reason. He is having the Tilden as a back up and because the claim is shortly ending and the vet thinks its a good idea to give him a top up - I agree but just feel a bit worried. I love my horse to bits, I will never forgive myself if something should happen. The vet giving the Tildren is the one who trialed it first in this country so he is an expert in his field.

hugs to you and your boy.
You must do what you feel is right by your horse. Also take into account what your vet advises as it seems he knows what he is talking about on this subject. Good luck with what ever you deside, hope it all goes well if you go ahead.

That's the problem, I think it has made a huge difference to him. Although I am not going to be able to fund three Tildren a year for the rest of Bailey's life ideally I would like to aim to afford to let him have one Tildren a year if I can afford it but I am hoping he won't really need it again or that there will be alternatives he can have. I really do think its made all the difference which is why I have decided to do it for what is hopefully the one last time. I think if I hadn't read about that poor horse and those poor owners I wouldn't really have analysed it to the extent that I have analysed it.

I'd say follow your vets advise, I was sure my little lad wouldn't come through his GA the other week, but luckily he sailed through it.
Vets have the training and the knowledge so I decided to follow mines advise, it's what we pay them for!
But as ever there is no guarantees. Thing is he could be fine with the Tildren then (god forbid) have an accident the next day. Everythings a risk.
