My lovely old boy went for his usual long walk this morning, went hooning by the river and a few minutes later was struggling to walk, somehow I managed to get him to the local farm and the farmer offered to take us home, took him to the vets and they said his stomach was full of fluid, probably blood , I agreed to a scan and they found a mass on his spleen, we were offered the option of an operation but the chances of a favorable outcome were thin so i decided it was time to let him go . why does this always hurt so much

So sorry to hear this. Lost a female to hemangiosarcoma, we did the op but she didn't make it to the other side - very similar situation, out walking around and running one day, the next she was a bit 'off' and then she was gone, she was so stoic we had no idea. Thinking of you x

I'm so sorry. I lost my old Spaniel to similar. I knew about the mass on her spleen, so it was pretty obvious when it was time. Looking back, I'm glad her end was quite quick. We were having a lovely walk one day and she was PTS an hour later. Hopefully you will come to the same conclusion, but I remember how much it hurt at the time. Take care of yourself x

So sorry, you must be in shock right now, take care of yourself x

We lost one in a similar way last year, and I'm still conflicted between feeling glad he only knew a day or so of illness before the end, and just feeling terribly robbed. It's a tough gig sometimes, loving these animals as we do.

Im so sorry . I lost my 10 year old GSD to this, she was full of life one day , slightly off colour next morning and by the time we got to the vets she’d collapsed . Heartbreaking and such a shock . Thinking of you

I'm so sorry. We lost a 6 yr old Rottweiler to a splenetic tumour which had spread to her bowel before she showed any obvious signs of being ill.
She started vomiting late one evening, went to the vet and had an ultra sound the next morning.
In the afternoon the vet operated and told us that the best thing was pts.
We took what comfort we could from the fact that she hadn't suffered for long and that she had throughly enjoyed her last few hours. She loved visiting the vet.
I hope you can feel similarly reassured that he didn't feel ill for long.

I’m so so sorry. I lost one to the same thing and only 4 years later can I think about him and not cry. It sounds like he had a fantastic life with you so hold on to that.

Thanks guys, just trying to get through the practical stuff, we've given a large bag of food and several bags of duck neck treats to a neighbour for his dogs, I've cancelled his flexi joint subscription and tooth cleaners. Might try and see if I can claim any of Tuesdays vet fees back on his insurance before I cancel that, I paid in full and guess the cremation won't be covered but maybe the scan will, so will contact them .

I'm sure we'll get another dog in time, I love long long walks and it's just not the same on your own.

RIP lovely boy. I'm sorry for your loss Bearsmum. What a shock. It sounds as though he was enjoying life pretty much to the end. Thinking of you x

I’m so sorry. We lost our Bear due to a big mass on his spleen. There’s no way I was putting an older dog through the potential recovery.
This, he was 13 and to be fair I don't think he would have survived the op, he didn't seem to be in pain, just dopey and confused , the vet stretchered him from our car, popped a canular in and gave him some fluid and sedative straight away , not the best of birthdays for my poor husband.
