Well i have finally found the courage to come on here and say goodbye to my gorgeous St Bernard Mahler. He passed away on Sunday 11th January but i haven't been able to do this before now because the grief has been so overwhelming.
He had been diagnosed with heart failure last Christmas and been given 3 months to live but he surpassed all expectations and enjoyed another year with us. He would have been 11 in April so a grand old age for a Bernie.
He was the dog i knew and loved right to the end and showed no signs of pain or suffering in anyway. I was dreading him going downhill and having to make a horrible decision but he even sorted that out for me and just drifted peacefully away in his sleep at home with the people that loved him.
Im rubbish at putting photos on here so i can't show you how gorgeous he was but i know he will be with me for the rest of my life.
Goodnight Big M xxx

So so sorry to hear this, it is so heartbreaking to lose them. But what a good age for a St Bernard, and good that he went peacefully in his sleep. That is the ending I have prayed for with dogs I have lost but sadly it has never happened.
Sending you hugs.

We lost our St Bernard, Uncle Boris from heart failure at the age of 8 so you have done really well to get him to 11. We had no warning that anything was wrong, he had gone for his morning stroll to the lake and we found him there collapsed. The fire brigade and vet came and we managed to get him to a stable but there was nothing could be done. Very sad they really are gentle giants.

xx

Hugs

So sorry for the loss of your much loved friend and that the end was peaceful, I do know how heartbreaking it is.

Ditto what MM said, I always hope they would go peacefully in their sleep at home in familiar surroundings & with people that love them but it hasn't happened yet.

If you need any help putting pics up I'm sure we would all help.

So horrid for you, but for him it sounds as though he went so peacefully which is what i want when the time comes for my dear friends. (I am so dreading the day)
Loads of hugs for you.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. He really did go in the best way possible, he got up at 5.30am for his usual toilet break then we heard him get a drink in the kitchen at 7am then when we came down at 7.30am for morning tablets he was fast "asleep" on his favourite blanket. So perfect.
I really would love to put some piccies up with a little bit of help from you guys so when i get a bit more organised and can bring myself to look at all my pictures i will let you know.

As Cala said, it's heartbreaking all the same for those that are left. But if there is such a thing as good way to end, it sounds as if that's what your Mahler got.

R.I.P. Mahler.

{{{Hugs}}} and sympathies with your loss.

I would love to see some piccies, when u feel ready...there is an instruction post in the Picture Gallery....I think from JesusRulesTheWorld, a step by step guide on uploading piccies

I am so sorry for your your loss - they become such important members of the family, and leave a huge hole when they leave us, but hopefully you have some wonderful memories to cherish, and he had such a peaceful parting feeling safe and loved.
My thoughts are with you.
