I am planning to move my boys over to the winter field in the next few days, the grass in places is knee high and a lush green colour.

My cob is currently on restriction as he gets fat easily and i would like him to lose a bit more, he goes on the grass at night (summer field is now eaten down to pretty much nothing) and he comes off in the day and has a section of soaked hay. My old man stays on the grass 24/7 and has a haynet of hay and a feed in a morning while cob isnt there lol;).

my question is how much goodness is likely to be in the grass on the winter field, will there be to much in it for my cob to stay on 24/7, should i keep him on restriction still.?

I know there is usually a flush in september but with the grass being longer will it have less in it (i know shorter grass is worse for sugars etc) my lad has never had lami and i would like to keep it that way hence his restriction and diet management.

thanks

I probaley wouldn't turn your cob out on it yet, the longer grasses are a lot better for him to eat, but you will find he will go and sorce {sp} out the shorter grass, which is still lush and green.

The grass still full of calories mine are working and out and full of energy be very careful.

Lol wish mine had more energy the lazy devil he is at the moment;)

Mine are still out 24/7. thought the longer grass may have less in it although did wonder with it being so green, looks very rich.

Thanks guys:) think i will keep to his routine a bit longer on at night and off on satvation paddock in the day. May leave him on the eaten down field a couple more weeks and let the old man eat the winter paddock down a bit, maybe just give the cob an hour a day?

Cob has been out of work due to feet problems last 2 weeks but hopefully will be able to restart work with him at thw weekend to help burn some calories :)

I'm in a similar situation to yours and waiting to move my boy over to his winter field! The grass is still too much on there yet and the weatherman says it due to warm up again at the weekend (so i reckon there would be the danger of the infamous 'September Flush' in the offing!!).

Likewise to what you are doing, he's staying on restriction until the grass starts to turn and the cooler cllimate is more of the norm.

Hi, I would wait until about mid October. We have ours on a small bit fenced off with electric tape still and the grass is still rich.

Well the cob is most disgusted that the old man is allowed on the grass whilst he stays on what he considers to be starvation at its best haha!

Julie111 yep will be mid october before i move him over now (poor starved hard done by boy) just hope my fencing survives his sulky strops ;)

The forecasters are saying that we maybe in for a bit of an Indian summer over the next few weeks - with all this rain I imagine the grass will go mad.

Mine will not be moving onto their winter paddock until the weather really turns which will probably be mid/end oct.
