Check it out, I have 4 ex racers, all mares, admittedly one was in foal, she cost £500 guineas at Leominster auction .
My 5 yo primitive rising mare was the same price, I was given another, swore I would never have a redhead but I was pleasantly suprised, I also have a Terimon filly , bought her as a foal for £700 , I have found that as long as they are handled quitely and treated right they are all okay.Mine have lived out all winter, well rugged , fed and hay or haylage ad lib, --my hay bill has been £120 a week- I will be soooo glad when the grass is finally through
I went to Brightwells ascot sales end of last year , out of curiosity = and a lot of the foals weren't even making the £300 gn reserve, ( a minimum imposed so it would deter the slaughter men , so i was told )hubby spoke to a couple of Tattersalls Ireland guys and they said that in the last Ireland sales a week before a lot of foals were shot as they weren't even getting bids in the ring .
TO THINK THAT THERES A LOT OF PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO WOULD GIVE THEIR EYE TEETH FOR A HORSE

I don't understand your confusion?
She's been sold as a brood mare - so (reading between the lines) she's got issues, probably soundness issues.

If you want to be shocked by prices you should go to the sales - last time I went to Tattersalls well bred mares in foal (by well bred stallions) were going for 600 guineas

Because there are so many of them - and because many people are anti TB's - especially those that have raced.
It is likely that at the end of the P2P season I will have a 7 year old TB on the market - I brought him at Ascot, for under £2K - He is a great horse, but it looks like he bleeds when under presssure in his races, so is unlikely to make it as a race-horse. As a riding horse, he is 150% in traffic, Very sound (and the bleeding for anything other than racing - top flight eventing is not going to be a problem), is wonderful in the stable, fantastic to box, shoe etc and exceedingly sensible to ride - 11 year old son hacks him out - and he has hunts well. Jumps like a stag. But as well as being a poor racehorse, he also wind sucks (does not affect his condition, and not seen to do it whilst out in the field) but given all these caveats - what are you going to offer me for him?

I paid £900 for William, he is by Lord David S and is a real stunner!

Don't get me wrong, he had issues, but bought him off the track at 4yrs and is now 10yrs and doing ODE !

Ex racers can be fantastic horses if you are willing to put in the work, and cheap!

I so totally agree - I brought two at Ascot in June 08 to go P2Ping with - but they are fantastic horses - even if they don't make the grade for that job....They are both totally reliable in the heaviest / scariest of traffic - both are great to clip, box, shoe etc. They are sane, lively rides, but by no means nut cases - one is so athletic and such a bold jumper he could be a 5* eventer, and the other would be anyones happy hacker - both of them cost a V reasonable price and both are under 7 years....one has so much bone he could be middle weight show hunter - give ex racers a chance they are brill!

Over here OTTB's and OTStB's are either free of maybe anything up to $300 for most. .....direct from trainers...but for the TB's with a few months let down from racing and a little reeducation they run from $1500 - $4000 dependant on temprement and looks.
The StB's in the same situation run $800-$2000.
