Nothing like planning ahead! I’m looking for accommodation for me and Mr StR, 6 September somewhere between Lyndhurst and Chichester, and probably Saturday and Sunday night, 7 and 8 September within 20 miles of Burghley I suppose, and we live in Devon so the west side is best - any recommends? Doesn’t have to be swish but it would be nice to be in a small town - somewhere that we can just wander out for dinner and a look around.

For the Revival - Chichester, Arundel (though you've then got to join the potential traffic chaos heading west), Midhurst, Petworth, Petersfield - all lovely places. Petersfield, Midhurst and Petworth mean you're north of the A27 too which has its benefits.

Chichester lacks anywhere decent to stay (as in high end, Goodwood itself ticks that box!) but the following are all in walking distance of the city centre, restuarnts (and station for a reason that matter below). Off top of my head (I know Chi very well) - Travelodge on West Street, the George in North Street does B&B, the Ship hotel again in North Street, Purchases (again North Street), Premier Inn south of the station. I have a feeling any AirBnBs will have been long booked up.

The big benefit of staying in Chichester is walking to the station and getting the bus to the Revival itself. If you're lucky queue wise you'd be transported on one of the old South Downs Routemasters (Stagecoach really do try to go all out), and buses have a different drop off point. Saves the queuing/parking hassle especially if wet and you can have a drink if desired etc.

Within 20 miles of Lyndhurst you're looking at Hedge End to Fareham etc and you probably don't want to be doing that drive the Friday morning to the Revival, the M27/A27 is a glorified car park these days, and even worse for Goodwood.

The Fox Goes Free is quite close to Goodworth & quite nice (although not immediately in Chi - it would be easily be taxi-able). I'm fairly certain it has accommodation although it would book up well in advance of the Revival so would need to book early (but same would go for anywhere vaguely close).

It's members only but might also be worth contacting Goodwood to see if anything can be done to become a member for the duration of the Revival (I'm not sure it's actually a thing but worth an ask - the worst they can say is no!) as The Kennels is lovely and well worth a meal, if you can get it.

I agree I think you're best staying in stamford for burghley if you can, as even 20 miles will add quite a travel time. And it's suitable for wandering/dinner etc.

Emsworth is just west of Goodwood and has a few pretty villages. North of the A27 is better for traffic though. A bit further west is Wickham and Bishops Waltham, both nice villages with easy access to the M27.

A lot of it westwards is villages rather than towns, oakham might be an alternative which is the other side of rutland water

I suspect (doing the cambs- somerset trip quite a lot) you wouldn't actually lose much time staying in peterborough either (as then A47 straight down to A14 home) but it doesn't fill the spec of pretty town to walk round like stamford does 😂

You could try Oakham? Or Rutland?

Recommend The George at Stamford for some nice food or Hambleton Hall if you are Rutland area - both a little pricey though.

We stayed at a lovely b&b in Boxgrove & walked to the revival - think it was about 2 miles.
No idea about burleigh
Dressing up is fun & take a picnic, including a nice bottle of bubbly ( in a wicker basket)

Stamford is definitely closest and lovely.
Otherwise I’d go the east side of Burghley, there are lots of nice villages or Market Deeping / Deeping St James is not bad.

There is probably less traffic coming in from that side
