Goodwood

Ack another one :(

Side point -I got to walk the steepest, most undulating parts of the course a few months ago (was on a tour) and it’s not easy underfoot. Jockey I got chatting to said it’s one of the hardest to ride, and this is after they’ve evened up what was locally known as ‘accident corner’ too.

Those who think people who go racing 'don't care' are wrong. Yes there are many who don't think beyond betting, but the atmosphere at Goodwood yesterday after he was injured was very subdued. People do care.

I feel so very sorry for his groom and all those at Alan King's. An empty stable and an empty lorry on the way home is horrible. Hollie Doyle also had a real bond with him and was very professional to go out and ride in the next race.

What happened?

150-1 pacemaker got away in the group 1 Sussex stakes and won! Looked like the others reacted too late, as the Ballydoyle pacemaker went further ahead than him but dropped back. This one kept going!

Jockey said in post race interview not seeing a grey nose meant he could keep riding

From the RP article on Trueshan

Alan King said “He’s coming back to Barbury too. We have a graveyard here so he’s going to be with Viking Flagship, Balder Succes and Katchit, which is where he should be.”

Lovely to hear.

As for Qirat @ 150/1 in the Sussex - wow
To be fair Balder Sucess was injured racing and they took him to Leahurst but he couldn't be saved. Katchit was retired but had colic and also couldn't be saved. And Viking Flagship died 2 years after being retired.

So they have tried to do right by them unlike most. Doesn't justify the total waste of life though.

But these deaths can't continue. I'm not sure why there are so many now. Maybe its because we are more aware of the deaths via social media and Animal Aid who record these deaths. The stats make grim reading.

If you click in the horses name it gives full details, age, weight, jockey, going, position in race, etc.

When they were interviewing the trainer he said it was just one of those unlucky accidents. He told about the time the hack he used to use on the training gallops was turned out in the indoor to exercise itself. It had a roll, leapt up and took off and broke it's hind leg. My friend's 2 yr old appaloosa was found in its stable with a broken leg. No sign of it being cast, just one of those awful things. I do think it is that so much is known because of social media and not that more is happening. I think if we heard news of every human that dropped dead from a heart attack, or was killed in an accident we would be horrified.

Don’t have the television on, but I have just seen the clip of that. Some downpour. I do like Whirl. Very pretty as well as fast.
