Gooey Eye

Hey, any recommendations for something to try on a gooey eye? Little shih tzu cross, seems fine other than a weepy eye. Would rather try bathing it at home then take her to the vets if it doesn’t clear up, I’m not concerned by it at this point. Thanks 🐶

Vet will give you chlorophenicol %, which you can get over the counter at the pharmacy, obviously don’t say it’s for the dog. However, I’d be wary with eyes, I check my lot all the time, at this time of year there are thousands of tiny seeds everywhere. If you’ve treated for 3-4 days without a huge improvement, I’d be off to the vet.

Be very careful with eyes and don’t use any medication without the vet checking them first. I would just bathe with salty water and cotton wool. If no improvement or getting worse then off to the vets

Thanks guys, I’ll give her til Friday and take her if no improvement. She’s not bothered by it at all, it’s just weepy but like you say, no point taking chances with eyes. I’m going away next Wednesday so need to make sure she’s sorted and I don’t need my Mum (dog and baby sitter!) to put drops in if possible.

I’m always very cautious with eyes, one thing I don’t attempt to treat at home . I had a bitch who presented one Sunday morning with a swollen and weepy eye . Took her to the vet that day and within 24 hours she was having surgery to remove the eye due to a tumour . There had been no symptoms previously.

I've had two out of my three with gloopy eyes due to the dry weather. To be honest, I've also had itchy eyes but the dogs are lower down in the dust than me

Both have had a trip to the vets and Willow is now fine but Button will be going back as hers hasn't cleared up with the drops. It's the eye she ulcerated as well (silly moo).

On that note, unless you're absolutely sure it's NOT an ulcer, don't bathe with water, salt or otherwise. If it is an ulcer, adding water will make it 100 times worse and make the ulcer swell.

Give it a few days but eyes aren't something I have a crack at myself as they're too precious so you may need to trip to the vets.

Shih tzu mix and weepy eye= vet, sooner rather then later.
Sorry but its to high risk for ulcers with that breeding. Any dog with a flatter face or protruding eyes runs a much higher risk then average for corneal ulcers due to their anatomy.

If your lucky it might just be conjunctivitis but I wouldn't recommend waiting and home treatments with eye issues.
