Happy New Year all
Know you will no doubt all be on the case anyway, but, imagine my surprise to wake up this morning to the government announcement appealing for all 4x4 drivers to get out and help our more ecologically sound, but snowbound neighbors in the current inclement weather.
I had to laugh a wry laugh for a couple of reasons:
firstly, do the government think we need to be asked to help people out?? we have been checking on our neighbours for days as I am sure you all have, and as I live spitting distance from our yard was first on the phone offering help to everyone who lived further away and might be stuck.
Secondly and more laugh inducing was the great irony that the lovely labour government have been taxing us to the hilt and indeed prevent us fromdriving the blessed 4x4's for years a obviously they are the devils work, killers, polluters, never mind they are essential to the lives of many who live outside the M25!!! and now, ooooohhhhh they have not had the foresight to grit roads and plan ahead and suddenly we need to be asked to help with these dastardly machines!!!!
oooooooohhhh they make me cross...and yes, I will be out helping but not because you have asked me to Gordon Brown, because we live in a rural community with strong values and where we help each other regardless of weather!!
Sorry, rant over! ;-)

Hi,
Sorry, you don't like Mr Brown. Personally, I think he's lovely, so much nicer than Tony Blair and David Cameron, and yes I've met them all!
I drive a 4X4 too, and live in a rural area, where no buses come anywhere near. It's been great, coz I have been able to get out to turn out my horse etc. However, they do guzzle diesel/petrol and I'm always moaning about the cost of diesel, but I knew all this before I changed from driving a Ford Fiesta to a Landrover Discovery. It was my choice to do so, because I live in the country and like to follow rural pursuits. I can't blame the government for that!
Also, your village/area might be nice and friendly and helpful, but where I live in rural North Yorks, the people are mainly standoffish, unfriendly and wouldn't help you if your life depended on it! Most of them are so smug and self-satisfied that they have so much, they don't give a fig for anyone struggling because of the weather or anything else.
Glad your so kind though.

A community is what you make it SF. Perhaps if you offered your help it might be reciprocated? Around here, people don't have to ask for help, it's on the doorstep before they know they need it, same as for most rural communities; we have to stick together and help each other, nobody else will.

OP! Yes, very ironic, it's not gone un noticed here either!

SF are you sure everyone is as awful as you say?
I live in the SE and whilst we are in commuter land we all still check on our neighbours and muck in to help. Maybe as MFH says you should start the ball rolling

As for Gordon Brown - no matter if I have met him or the other leaders - I personally am against many of his policies and consider him and his party pretty anti-rural.

It is pretty ironic isn't it that suddenly 4x4 owners are being called upon but the rest of the time it's "let's tax them more for having these bigs cars they don't need!" (although i note GB seems to get ferried about in a Range Rover - hmm, yes really needed in the centre of London that!!)

They don't seem to appreciate that many of us DON'T live in towns or cities and DON'T have easy access to public transport and the roads do NOT get gritted or cleared as often (if at all) thereby having a 4x4 is a godsend. Sure it's your choice to get one knowing the expense but just WHY are 4x4 drivers penalised quite so much when the choice of car is common sense for the area it is used in?!

At present i am carrying a tow rope in the back of mine just in case I come across anyone in need. I don't need to be 'asked' to help either!!!

Exactly
grin.gif
I do not have a 4 x 4 as it is not needed where I live - but by golly I wish I had one today as my yard is up a single track lane on a hill
crazy.gif
I do however have a diesel guzzling dirty lorry.
We all make choices but sometimes we have to choose the "non ecological" option for reasons of practicality. People like GB just do not appreciate the problems of normal people and I for one find it offensive to be advised to check on my neighbours - already done
laugh.gif
Getting the shopping for her later as I have always done if needed.

sorry to hear things are not so friendlt sheltland fudge...we have only lived in the countryside for 14 months, having been in london for many many years before that. we came with open hearts and mind have been welcomed with open arms...we love it, it feels like we have always been here and whatever Mr Brown is like in person the policies of his government stink, and are eroding whjat made this country survive in the first place..the beautiful countryside we are blessed with. he has undermined farmers till they can no longer survive, taken away traditions and livelihoods and then has the cheek to pop up and say "oh, by the way don't forget to check on your neighbours all you hateful 4x4 drivers" Give us a break. My choice is to have a practical car which I can get dogs, children, shopping in, tow a trailer (so I don't need a lorry too...god forbid!!) it is 4 wheel drive but so what?? its not posh, I am not posh and take great offence at people who stereotype and are convinced I would neither stop to help or offer help without being asked!!! ooooohhhhh, stop me, I am on a roll!!!

gordon brown should be strung up and publicly floged for doing his best towards ruining this country

there are a long list of anti working people policys, ie selling large chunks of our gold reserves at a low price, alowing uncontroled imigration which drives down wages and puts presure on services costing the tax payer, taxing private pensions getting us into huge debt that will take years to sort out, fudging the referndum on Europe.. He is not a nice man he is VILE along with his spiteful hipocritcal party....

I don't have a 4x4 (can't afford one for a start!) but I did have to smile considering the punitive road tax that GB was more than happy to impose on them. As regards checking on neighbours . . . hmm . . . not round my way they don't . . . the only interaction I get from my neighbours is the little darlings hurlings snow-and-ice balls at my windows . . . .

Used to live in Hampshire where no one gives a s*** about anyone else unless they are grip for climbing the social ladder.
Moved to Cronwall, lovely people and we live in a lovely village where(shock horror) people speak to each other!!!!
Gobsmacked but vv happy

Gordon Brown destroyed a large number of hard working people,s pension funds as chancelor,He made an appalling hash of selling our gold.He has presided over the finnancial ruin of this country. The sanctimonious pratt should be put against a wall and shot.

Not keen on him are you mike?!

But I have to agree with you. He is now asking 4 x 4 drivers to help?? He can fcuk right off!! I was really upset when he (and his mates at the BBC) started their dig at 4x4 drivers. I drive a 12 year old Disco - I am not highly paid but I saved up for it so I could tow my trailer safely.
I have NEVER claimed anything from the state, I have worked hard in full time employment and yet I am asked to pay extra tax thanks to the 4 x 4 Chelsea tractor drivers and Gordon Brown and his short-sighted policies.
In my village, we would naturally help each other - I have just taken a couple of neighbours to the supermarket in town - I don't need GB telling me to do it!
Roll on election day.

I don't really care whether a PM is nice or not - what I am interested in is whether he or she is a good PM!

Personally, I don't think Gordon Brown is that bright. His only paid employment prior to becoming an MP was as a part-time lecturuer in social policy at Paisley College - he has never published work, written academic papers, run a business, has a responsible position in a large organisation - nothing. He has an OK degree but so do many others. Most of what he does is formulated for him by spin doctors. He has little original thought. What he does have is reactionist and overly personal. eg. introducing the child tax credit, failing to secure an opt out to European harmonisation legislation for the British hors sector which unlike the rest of Europe, mainly use double trailers and so are more affected (I doubt he really understands opt outs from European legislation anyway).

That at least would have been more environmentally friendly. His scrappage scheme follows the same theme - badly thought out and reactionist. It is very anti-environment as it encourages people to drive small cheap "throwaway" cars. It always costs more to the environment to manufacture a whole new car than run an older slightly less efficient one.

I got rid of my 4 x 4 because the fuel was too expensive. I find it cheaper to have a 3.5 tonne box and 2 cars instead. So thats one extra vehicle on the road due to his taxation policy. I do find though that fitting winter tyres to one of my saloons means I can drive pretty well in all that the weather has thrown at us so far. Why doesn't anyone in the present Government publicise the fitting of winter tyres - it is compulsary in Germany. Are they all thick or something?

Dear all
I am writing to him- you may or may not feel it will make any difference but I think a few voices may be heard more than my tiny voice>...if any of you are interested in getting involved I would love it if you would e mail me your thoughts and I will attach to my letter...no swears please but heartfelt emotion very welcome: e mail is sarah.trinder@btinternet.com x

and we can write or email his succesors, possibly Tony Cameron and his Blue Labour sorry I mean conservative party
wink.gif

I think it would a good idea to quiz the candidates from all the parties in your area and find out which hold simalar views to yours
and would represent your best interests if elected

I think he is a very intelligent man, regardless of how you interpret that as translating to his policies. It was at what is now Glasgow Caledonian University where he was employed for more than four years. He was considered something pretty special there. His 'big book' was based on his phd, but he has published several small books and plenty of short articles. I do agree that he is often led by personal conviction, particularly in his social policies but I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing.

Sorry OP - off topic. I do feel for you as 4x4s have been demonised. I live in an area and take part in activities where I would benefit from a 4x4 but I could not justify the fuel costs at the moment.

But on another note ,he has wrecked the finnances of a major world power.he will go down in history for sure,. Useless Bastard!
