It was a long day - left the yard at 6am and got back to my house at 10pm but on the plus side we didn't get lost and managed to squeeze through Pangbourne :D. We got there in time for Rosie to walk the course while her Mum and I made coffee and did the paperwork. When R got back she said the course was the hardest N she's seen this season with a scary looking drop where the ground slopes down before the water and plenty of skinnies and corners - all up to height.

Bolly's dressage was first and he went ok but not as well as he can so we weren't surprised by the 36 pens. Then it was Frodo's turn - he'd had a couple of lessons since the PC Champs but he forgot what he'd learnt and did a mediocre test with a terrible final centre line - the 37 pens were well deserved. It's fairly boring but the video is here if you have 3 or 4 minutes to waste

We then had quite a long gap until the SJ for our sections started and Bolly was on first again. He went clear and then it was Frodo. The jumps were dressed with flowers and one basket was being adjusted when he was trotting round - moving flowers are seriously dangerous if you're a Frodo so there was a bit of silly behaviour but he settled again quickly and jumped really well just having an unlucky pole. Video.

The cross country is the other side of the road so I trotted over and decided to watch the drop and the water jump then scoot back through the gap in the hedge to catch the finish. The bits I filmed. He was a very good boy and popped round like a pro although after watching all those TBs speeding round Burghley he looks a bit 'pedestrian'. In fact he got 6 time which was by no means the worst in his section so he got lots of pats. Bolly's turn and Rosie wasn't necessarily expecting great things from him. He's just been hacked around for most of August because she'd been so busy working on Frodo for the Champs but he was a star and romped round. She took one long route (to give him an easier approach to one of the corners I think) but he still finished with only 7.2 time pens.

Charlie pony had come along for the ride so he came off the lorry at this point to stretch his little legs and have a munch at the grass while the other two were cooling off and it was my job to hang on to him. His head collar is much too big (really must get him one that fits) and of course it fell off - fortunately I noticed and managed to pull it back on to his neck so he didn't get loose but I was a bit  - I can just imagine the chaos a loose coloured mini shetland (if that's what he is - he's very small) careering round the lorry park would have caused!

So we loaded all 3 with nice fat haynets and pottered over to look at the scoreboard. Frodo was clearly going to be well down the order but it looked as though Bolly might be placed so we left an sae with the secretary and set off for the long journey home. Turns out Frodo ended up in 17th place. Without the pole he'd have been 15th and if he'd finished on his dressage score he'd have only been 9th - his test just wasn't good enough on the day. Bolly, however finished up in 7th and would have been 3rd without any time so he's super-swot of the week and goes to the top of the class :D.

Sorry, that's a bit long - thanks for reading if you have and coffee and croissants (I haven't actually got any croissants so they're very virtual but hey, the thought was there ;)).

Thank you Stilton. A picture of Charlie and Frodo at the PC Areas - they're great buddies and he's much more settled on the lorry if Charlie's around.

.

Saratoga - it was a bit of a stinker. Good prep for going up a level I should think but certainly not a first time Nov's track. You had horrible weather yesterday didn't you, just to make it even harder? How did you get on?

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought the Novice was pretty tough. Was glad to have dropped mine down to the open BE100 having had a whoopsy at Chilham! There didn't seem to be much of a let up anywhere so full marks to your two - very well done :)

t_e, he was a freebie from friends of a friend who'd got him from a rescue centre but it didn't work out. Not sure why, maybe they thought it would be like having a big dog, although he has a tendency to bite so you have to keep away from his teeth! Bolly has 2 points now - not bad in just 3 Novice outings and considering his first ever BE event was at Poplar in March :D.

Thank you lex2501 - it was tough and hilly too so quite a test - think you were wise to drop back a level. Rosie had a very wet woopsie (she could have drowned if the water had been deeper lol) at Carlton last time out on Bolly and she was a bit horrified when she realised just how hard the XC was on Saturday.
Are you going to do a report (there don't seem to be nearly as many posted these days)? Hope it was a confidence boosting day for you :).

We had a fab day thanks - finishing 2nd which was unexpected as he is a little tricky in the dressage, and can be a pole basher so a 31.5 double clear was just what was required!!

I will put together a report with some piccies to show off my clever boy :)

Ah brilliant days work, sorry I didn't get over - we had all sorts of dramas, my old mare is in her new home and now decided she can't be alone (new companion went out) then found a lost Jack Russell so was late getting over to visit Cruise. Well done to all concerned :D

NR99 - thank you. Jack Russells are so gorgeous but so naughty - daughter's one got in my car when we got back from Goring and wouldn't get out! There were alpacas there by the way, albeit too far away for either of ours to see but who knows, a sensitised horse might just have noticed . Your mare needs a Charlie by the sound of it!

HtoT - thank you as well :). Yes both are at Keysoe on Saturday. I haven't been before so I'm looking forward to it.

OIAM - I think he looks pretty good - was a big drop (if not quite the Leaf Pit) and looked even worse from the jump off side and the water wasn't particularly spooky but quite complicated.
He's a good chap Bolly - taking his time getting the hang of it - that's WBs for you - but R's dressage and SJ trainers think he has real potential. He was bought as a project but I don't think he'll be going anywhere just yet :D.

Did your little pony get stuck on top of the tack locker in your lorry? I saw a pony get stuck, and it looked like yours, but not sure if it was?

No, not ours for once. Frodo has been known to get his feet up on the tack locker (idiot) but Charlie was at the back and facing the other way and to be honest, I'm not sure he could get his feet even that high - he's very small.

Very well done and glad the small boy enjoyed his big day out! ;)

Thanks :). I daresay he'd have enjoyed escaping and romping round the lorries even more (but we wouldn't have ).

So will Charlie be Rosie's new eventer for the 2012 season?!

Think Rosie would have to lose some weight and cut her legs off at the knees so her feet didn't drag on the ground OIAM. On the other hand, if there's a 3 stone midget dressage diva lurking somewhere please could they PM me :D.

Thank you DHB :).

Thanks Jules - saw on fb that Zeb is being pretty damn brilliant too ;). Keysoe next, Rosie's been before a while back but new venue for me, Frodo and Bolly.

GM - pleased you thought they were making at least 2 of the jumps look easy, thank you. How did you get on or were you just spectating?

Oh bum - how do you desensitise daft horses to bunches of flowers without spending a fortune at the florist :(. Thanks for that Jules :D
