Ok, so arrive and Lucy helps me warm up for dressage. Warmed up beautifully and I ruin it by leeting him walk on a long rein at which point he gets distracted. Does a stuffy test to score 39.1 which I am pleased with for his first Novice.

SJ - jumping ok, warms up ok if again a bit stuffy, then goes in to jump a lovely round and only have one down towards the end of the course, excellent!

XC: 1, 2 and 3, all very straight forward, he was raring to go and pinged them, 4 was a table with only a few strides to a massive drop (up to my shoulder, i.e. higher than my stable door!) He flew the table then launched off the drop, eeek! Down a hill to the water (which was almost dry!), rail then step down, two steps up and brush out. False groundline due to lack of water meant a few fumbled it, but he popped through nicely, although trotted over brush. Then at eight there was this horrible box thing set on an angle so it was more of a diamond. Causing no end of issues. I took what I thought was a nicer line, he wobbled, I yelled, he jumped...but forgot to actually fold his legs and left 3 out of 4 behind! I was unceremoniously dumped out of the side door onto my head. B then disappeared off up the field, jumped back UP the drop, they failed to shut the gate and he crossed the lane and headed off to the lorry park. Eventually someone caught him and we were reunited and back on our way! 9 was a trakhener, a bit looky so I smacked him, then 10 was a nice brush, he galloped down the hill too fast for 11 so I circled and came back through - 11, 12 and 13 were brush, step up, skinny brush, nice and easy, 14 was a pheasant feeder into the woods, skipped over that, then over the rails at 15, the brush at 16, the house at 17, 18 and 19 was a double of corners - I decided discretion was the better part of valour and took the alternative of two houses, over a roll top at 20, a brush to skinny flowerbox at 21 and a large table to finish at 22. And a round of applause from some bystanders!

He then jogged all the way back to the lorry. Hmm. So we are both ok, I am very annoyed I fell off, muppet that I am, but the video does show there was no way I was staying on, I have trashed my HS1 hat which now has a crack in it (!), and I am extremely pissed off that despite finishing, we were TE for going overt he time because no-one shut the blinking gate! Had they done, we would have been reunited in a shorter time and I would have finished without an E on my record! Oh well. Think it has done him good as he has always been over-cocky and he was very careful round the rest of the course, and has reminded me he is not a machine! Hey ho, we live to fight another day, all be it slightly sore on my part.

Big thanks to my helpers for the day, much appreciated!

Anyway - video of my fall and a few fences afterwards: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I80XC9aVf3g

Nice report! Shame about the fall, but it sounds like you had a fair attempt anyways! And at least you can say you got him fit enough, if he managed to run an extra KM in addition to the course!

You are very hard on yourself!

This is the story from my point of view -
Nice dressage his faults came from opening his mouth nothing else you could have done about that. He was accurate and had good paces and transitions. Tilly got a 7 for her riding, horse got a 5 for submission. Dressage will come - Rome was not built in a day!

SJ - lovely thought she was going to go clear really unlucky pole!

XC - which would you be more irritated about? A stop or falling off from something he had at least tried but left a leg behind?

yeee well done for finishing T bet ur soo pleased apart from having to buy a new hat!!

You doing a PN next??

[/ QUOTE ]

Nope! Entered Monmouth novice - see no reason to downgrade as his confidence is still sky-high, and I am feeling fine too, I shall just take some alternatives if needs be until he is more solid at Novice. He didn't back off at all once we restarted except at the trakhener which TBH I was expecting him to do anyway even if we'd not parted company....

The lesson of the day is that rider must stay on pony, and pony must FOLD legs when jumping!

Oh T - OUCH OUCH OUCH

Hope you are OK honey, not a nice fall and a long way down too! He looks soooooooooooo fit and up for it though - hopefully that has taught him a lesson!

Ta! I am ok, just a bit stiff - looking back, he knows his job, just thinks he knows better than me - he straightens up to jump directly between the wings - at least he knows he has to go between the flags! I think he will have taught him a good lesson in listening - he was very easy to set up round the rest of the course! I was laughing about it with the ambulance men, who kindly gave me a lift to retrieve him, so no lasting damage I hope!

he looked really good through the step to brush etc etc, i just got the impression that he wasn't listening to your steering as much as he could have... you were steering the front end and the body wasn't quite following, cos he looked as if he thought he knew better! hope that makes sense.
looks like a lovely horse, good luck at your next one. bet you're glad you had such a good hat on!

Yes, hopefully I will stay on next time! Only the second time I've ever fallen off him, did it in style! Still kicking myself though...

Think that is exactly what happened - he straightened for the wings coz he thought he knew best, oh well! Yes, I am VERY glad of the decent hat, and will be replacing it with another of the same.

ETA - thankyou, he seemed fine round the rest of the course!

well done...hope ur okay...well done sj and dresage i would be over the moon with that5 even if it wasnt my first one!!! hu was the person videoing you??? they made me laugh!!!

That's not a bad result at all!

Just think back, how well would you have done if you had been on Twiggy? No comparison is there, the Boy is a star! Well deserved pat for him and next time use sticky bums!!

That's a fantastic debut - you were just a bit unlucky... I am horrified about your hat, they are supposed to withstand a lorry rolling on them or something!
Great dressage and what a difference in the SJ eh!!

Hard luck just one of those things I guess. He looked very confident at Novice level and coped very well otherwise. That might just have taught him a bit of a lesson. I think he will find the Novice at Monmouth nice you both certainly more than capable.

It's a little crack/deep scratch about an inch long, looks ok from underneath but I hit the ground really hard so am taking no risks and just telling myself thank god I had such a good hat on! Imagine if I'd had a slightly shoddy one...

Anyway, like you say, a bit unlucky, a good lesson, and pleased with the dressage and SJing, next time I will stay on!

Thanks Pat - if it were Twigs, bless her we'd still be going backwards in the lorry park at intro, if we'd ever even got that far! At least she has a happier time of it now!

I am not totally convinced sticky bums would have kept me on that! If it were a dressage test it would say 'horse must learn to listen to rider and fold his feet over the fences'!!

Thanks SJ - it's taught us both a good lesson - he was VERY easy to set up round the rest of the course and really listened to the lines I wanted him to take, and also backed himself off a bit and did not touch the final table, which are the fences he normally taps, and I have realised that if there are alternatives, this year is the time to take them, next year is the time to ask him the questions once he is solid at the level. Not much help at that fence as no black flag option, but I was in good company, Laura Collett and Dumbleton had 20 there (assume it was there), Cressida Clauge-Reading had two stops there on one of her rides....so I wasn't alone in struggling, and they are far more experienced than either me or Boysie!

Very very very sore! I hurt all over practically! Oh well, you live and learn, must NOT fall off onto my head again! Hopefully the next one will be fine...

I have just emailed the video clip to my work email in the hope of eliciting sympathy (and tea) from colleagues when I get into work in a bit!!

He really does look so fab (bar the naughty boy moment!)!

What a bummer about the fall it does look as tho he was being very cheeky on the approach to that. But otherwise he looks as tho he is pinging round as tho its far too easy for him! Also great news about the SJ!!

Huge well done for the dr and sj, thats a real acheivement!
And good on you for getting back on and finishing. That box fence is always sited there and generally causes a few problems as they dont seem to register it as a jump. Moon had to do one at Stonar and nearly made a mess of it!

Cheers Doff!

Boss, I think he registered it as a jump, looking back at the video, he tries to put down too early and catches a foreleg on it, then twists his back end which flicks me out of the saddle.

I think he was just being cocky and wanted to go straight between the wings not realising it was a diamond shape, then didn't quite reach enough to clear the far point. He'll learn from it I hope! We had the same issues SJing until recently - he would completely ignore any setting up I did because he thought he knew best!

Ouch hope you get lots of tea and sympathy at work and well done that hat! Deffo get a new one to.

That looks to me to be one of those things the commentators call a sharpener for the horse and definitly sounds like he's learned from it. So hope those bruises and aches fade soon.

Well done.

(How big are those fences , arghhh need a brandy now I've wacthed that, will stick to my dessage wimp status.)

Cheers Ali! Fences at novice are up to 1.10, but he does jump better over them when they are a bit bigger! No sympathy yet at work, they are all just disappointed that the vid does not work here!!!
