I remember him as well. I'm german and when I was a teenager I lived close-ish to Aachen. I've seen him competing at the CHIO in Aachen. I even got an autograph on the programm, when I asked him in the collecting ring. He was very friendly and took time to talk to everyone. On the same day I also met Josef Neckermann, Fritz Tiedemann Raimondo d'Inzeo, Nelson Pessoa, Alwin Schockemöhle and some other famous riders. They all were very nice and I got autographs of all of them. It's a shame, that I haven't got that programm anymore.
if you look at the pictures on the website I think the Italian team is probably the d'Inzeo brothers judging by the uniform. Remember watching them for years at the RI and the HOYS in London
and the Italian team was typically mounted on Irish bred horses
those were the days when horses had names you could pronounce and were mainly Irish and not German/Dutch
nostalgia - it's wonderful - found some old RI programs from the 60s a year or so ago - packed them away - from the days when the RI was run at the White City (isn't that now yet another anonymous useless shopping center ?!)
also makes me think of D. Bunn, Beethoven and D. Broome winning the world champs (iirc) at Hickstead
Thank goodness D. Bunn rescued the RInternational and started up Hickstead !!
Indeed, and he still turns up at lots of shows, looking well. Think he still works for the delivery company USP which sponsors a lot of classes. Also he presents the Halla Trophy to the leading horse in the major classes at Aachen each year.
