Okay, so the horsey world is known for gossip. I am such a quiet person on my yard, but it appears I've now been subject to rumors twice now. Both were a case of chinese whispers by the sounds of it.

For example, one time, somebody found out I was looking at a horse, so then it got spread around the yard and made into a rumor that I was going to buy a 4 year old 16hh+ horse for myself. The truth was that I was looking for a horse for a friend and thus was only seeing it to give some advice to my friend about whether to go in for a vetting etc. Must have been going on for about 3 months as that's how long after seeing the horse I finally got asked by someone 'what's this I hear about you getting a new horse?'

So what things have happened that have caused people to gossip about it and turn it into a rumor?

Only amusing things please, don't want to turn this into an angry topic about people spreading stuff. But just things that will make us laugh.

They are the devil, aren't they? :D

Treat 'em like mushrooms, keep 'em in the dark and feed them full of *****....:D

Well, apparently once my husband wasn't happy with me and was off back to his ex....first I heard...and you can imagine the bother it cause.....

Years ago I was chatting to a livery about the yard she was moving to. She was going on about how fabulous it was so I said "ohh I might just follow you there it sounds wonderful" - which was an off hand comment I made while laughing. Two days later I had the YO on the phone asking me if I was leaving and why had I not told her  Apparantly someone had overheard me and gone running to the YO

I took this pic of my horse's hooves to show how well he is doing (despite the Cushings). The surface was a new mud free track to the field and it was still in process of being laid at that stage. The middle was smooth but the sides (where my horse chose to walk) was still being smooched down.

To get the pic onto my laptop from my phone - I uploaded it to FB first.....with no caption or comment.....and it set off WW3!

Within 12 hours I had an angry message from a member of the YO's family via FB.

Turns out a livery (of the s*** stirring variety ) saw the pic on FB and went running to the YO, saying I was slagging off the yard and the new track .

It caused distress to the YO's family and the gentleman who was helping to build the track - and for this I was furious as I am extremely fond of them all.

Of course the story went round the yard and there were references that I'd put snarky comments on FB and then removed them.....all untrue .

I explained everything to the affected parties and apologised for any distress it may have caused.
Said livery looked like an idiot.....not that she's learnt anything by it .

i was once accused of stealing peoples equipment... i had so much stuff go missing i started to lock it up inside my stable and apparently thats where i hid it all :o turns out the person spreading the rumors was actually the person taking everyones stuff as i found out when i was working for the YO and i was looking after her horse, went to go in her box for her horse's turn out rug and there they were! my hardy boots, my martingales, breastplates, kieffer bridle, schooling whips, lunge lines, lunge cavason even half of my grooming kit and all of it had my horses name on (because write it on there) there were other people stuff in there too! what none of us could figure out was why she was taking mine and another liveries stuff as we both had horses that took everything in x-full and her horse was a 15.2 tb so it would have never have fit, she even had some other peoples rugs... its safe to say the rumor died rather quickly :o

lol the latest rumour doing the rounds on the farm is that the new people who arrived in the summer are 'really bad and if you upset them they will kill you!' they obviously have a stack of bodies from previous yards hidden somewhere:eek::rolleyes:

Apparently I was feeding my tb pure oats. Oh and one day he bolted out of the horse walker before I could shut the gate. I caught him fine but tge rumour was I'd come off him whilst riding him! Ermm he only had a head collar on so where that one came from I'll never know!

I was on a yard where there were lots of thefts it was things like a couple of slices of hay, some feed, some supplement.
One day I made the joking remark that seeing as none of my stuff was being stolen it must be me that was the thief. You can guess what happened next....yep the rumours were flying that I was the yard thief :(
Given that I had 3 horses I was hardly going to be able to keep them on the piffling stuff being pinched.
The funniest thing about it all was I had a stack of my own haylage, a stack of my own hay & a fortnightly delivery of feed....which everyone knew about because if they were ever short on anything I was the 'go to' person to borrow from :D

Another great rumour was when I first met my now husband, initially we wanted to keep things quiet so I was being a little coy & not saying who I was seeing.
I was also having to go to London a lot at the time.
A rather stupid person read in a gossip magazine that Robbie Williams had a new 'secret' girlfriend put 2 and 2 together & got 69 ;)
She then spread the most ridiculous rumours that I was boffing Mr Williams. Again this was so ironic because many moons ago I hung around in a group of people which Robbie used to & knowing what I dud about him....well lets just say I wouldn't go there :D

I was showing a prospective livery around the yard a few weeks ago, and she told me all about the woman who was here before me and who was useless and couldn't make a go of it so she sold up and went to England about five years ago. Towards the end of the tour she asked how long I'd been here. She did have the grace to blush when I said "Ten years!" :D

One of the teenagers on our yard decided to sell her horse, and my daughter was going through a periodic being pissed off with all things horse at the time said she felt like doing it at the time. Overheard by yard gossip who immediately told the YO that our mare was up for sale. As YO bred and produced her she contacted me to ask if she could buy her back as she was still very fond of her and wanted to keep her on the yard. No, she wasnt for sale and wont be, but it was pretty amusing as to how it was twisted.

These are fab. I had a conversation with people on a friends yard about colic ops. I basically said I'd do it with daughters 5yr old, but not my 23yr old. I spent 6wks having random people telling me how sorry they are that I'm getting her pts soon. Especially when I'm actually riding her at the time.
I also said I couldn't cope with the rather stunning coloured cob on a neighbouring field, unless I had a ft groom to keep all that flowing white hair clean. Apparently I think all horses with grey or white in their coat look awful, despite the fact mines grey. And I wouldn't have that horse because I think its rude.
Discussing our kids taste I said my daughters always liked finer ones, & lively forwards ones. And when she's 16, wants a tb just like my friends. (stereotype highly strung nutter). Rumour has it my 7yr old will be riding said tb over winter.
Best is that my friends super chilled 2yr old gelding is a stallion, & has impregnated all the mares on her yard. And no one has a clue where that started.

I'm on a yard by myself, but I still haven't managed to escape the rumours and gossip. ;)

The best one was that I was giving the ride of my grey (who was three at the time and unbacked) to the grandaughter (who was still learning to ride at a RS) of a lady that my Mum knows.

I only found out about it because the grandmother spoke to my Mum about it. The girl had her parents convinced that this was going to happen. I felt quite awkward about it when I saw her family for quite a while, but the girl had made it up.

A rumour was spread around my yard that when i went to view my horse prior to buying him he was rearing when being ridden! The person who spread the rumour wasn't with me when i viewed and i've never seen him rear :)

its been a while since i was on yard, but the one that made me cross was when another owner spread gossip that mare was riddled with worms, it was that bad , you could see the worms in her poo. No ordinary worms, these where HUGE:eek:

This person collected a sample from the field to show everyone.

She was a tad embarrased when she was told by the YO, that they where indeed earthworms having a snack.:p

Many congratulations EF, hope all goes well with you & your bump. :)

Thankyou :D

My 19 year old Sec D bolted with me 7 weeks ago and I broke both my wrists. Everyone assumed it was my new TB (who I have only had since Feb) that I came off as she had just come back into work the previous week after 2 months off with injury. Which is a fair enough assumption.

However a month later I heard the rumour going round the hunting fraternity that I was sueing the Tb's previous owner for selling me a dodgy animal! I quickly informed the previous owner as 1 I'm friends with them and 2 he is very well know in the hunting community and people often go to him to find them a horse as he has good contacts.

Some of these are amusing, but like olderthanshelooks situation - it can affect other people in such a negative manner. The guy could end up with a damaged reputation just for people to keep themselves occupied and have something to talk about.

Olderthanshelooks - hope you're wrists have healed. How awful to break both!
EquestrianFairy - that's great news! Congrats

Rodeo 12, thank you the casts came off on Tuesday so now the real recovery can start, still got atleast another 6 weeks off work (I work on a farm) can't ride until Feb/ March :(

I admit I don't mind a good gossip if what I'm gossiping about is true and not harmful to others.

Those that make up Bulls**t need to just get their own life and not damage others.

This is BRILLIANT! Nobody ever makes up rumours about me and pop stars :(

This is my fav rumour, and I can imagine everyone in the yard talking! Too funny!

Hmmm the one that the farrier told me was that next door had said I was overhorsing myself with 3 horses and the new one of fine type would be trouble .... he said that it was in fact his cousin's 32 year old pony and did she need to borrow his specs:p:p

I have my own place but because a girl from the yard down the road saw a man in my field a rumour very quickly spread through said yard that my horse had been put down! I had a few people stop by my field that night to ask about it and, shocked, I quite happily showed them he was very much alive and tucking into his dinner! The girl said she had seen the knackerman in the field with his truck but it turned out it was my stepdad, with his tiny Peugeot! God knows how she came up with that one.

Cause a stir, put a smallish cushion up your jumper when visiting the yard & see how long it takes for really juicy rumours to go around !:D

A lady on my old yard asked my friend if I was pregnant as she had "had a dream". Turns out I was (about 3 weeks) and didn't even know it myself at that point. Witchy or what!!
