Talk about freek accidents, my filly managed to get the side of the stirrup iron wedged behind her lower teeth and I couldn't pull it out! Luckily there was someone near to remove the saddle as she was panicking and I needed to be at her head. I'm still in shock it could have ended in disaster if she had bolted in a blind panic.

Mine did this when I left him tacked up for 2 mins in stable. Luckily he didn't panic and just stood there with his mouth wedged on the iron, neck bent right round.

Glad yours was all ok.

Can happen so quickly. They don't half like to frighten us, and themselves in many daft ways.
Seen many a youngster try and get stirrup, and a few succeed in this exact predicament.

Glad all was well in the end. x

Oh wow it's not just mine to have done this then. I was stood right there and saw her bend her neck to have a look and sniff which I thought fine as she's only 2.5 and is inquisitive. I never thought that could happen though! It was so wedged though like hooked on, the fact that she had her head right up didn't help as the leather was taught and made it harder to try and unlatch. I'm always very safety conscious but who could see that one coming!

This happened to me on a youngster I was backing. All was going superbly (!) until he whipped his head round and before I had a chance to move my leg he grabbed his stirrup and was stuck - he panicked and totally flipped , no suprise and thankfully the stirrup un-wedged (if that's even a word!) itself from his mouth!. Definitely a heart in mouth moment!
These things do happen. X

One of the ponies did it at my ex-yard. They were run up when he did it! Lord knows how he managed it, as he was quite an old boy. He fell onto his side, but thankfully didn't panic. YO and a few others managed to get his saddle off and help him get unhooked!

Poor thing was a little worried, but no harm done!

Yes I was thinking it still could happen run up as well, I was thinking of maybe using quick release but that wouldn't help if its wedged anyway. I was actually just leaving the stirrups loose purposefully just for a walk about as she's unbacked, I guess I'll just have to be extra vigilant!

Sadly how ever much you think safety our darling sweet horses find away to say "didnt see that coming did ya " lol. Do they do it to keep us on our toes and forever feeling young ? Mmmmm the ******* :)
