Did a site visit today to sort a quote out for building work at a clients second home " How much " she said, it's alright for you got a horse you must be loaded  Do people realise many folks have horses and give up lots of things to keep them.

Was as much as I could do not to give her a less than polite reply :D some people ehh !!

Rant over ;)

Yep, I've been told I must be rich for years now. It usually comes from people who smoke, or are out partying every weekend! I don't have a social life, and spend less on my animals than they do in the pub.

She must be terribly hard up if she can only afford a second home but not quite stretch to a horse....:D :D

what the general public dont realise it IF WE DIDNT HAVE HORSES we could afford to go out for a meal sometimes, have a nice car, maybe a little weekend awayor even an actual HOLIDAY!!!!!!! although i would like the extra money, i would hate to be without a horse.....

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

People (non-horsey type) really have no idea! I said to a meeting of the New Forest National Park Authority a few years ago when they were trying to do some very horse unfriendly things, that they really had to get their heads around the concept that PEOPLE WILL GO WITHOUT SO THEIR HORSES DON'T HAVE TO. They couldn't grasp that at all, and as a consequence lost their battle with the recreational horse keepers of the New Forest...

Tonight, I am going to be recklessly extravagant and dye my hair to cover the grey... That's what counts as "me-time" in these days of horse ownership. On the other hand farrier is coming tomorrow and ponies will have more spent on them than I have spent on myself this week, as per normal, and I wouldn't want it any other way really.

I hate this, it is so frustrating! I reckon keeping my horses costs about the same as smoking 20 fags a day, especially now some are over £7 a pack, but noone ever says "oh you smoke you must be rich"

I don't go out drinking either and rarely buy myself clothes or anything, I'd rather spend it on the GGs.

I've been saying that to people for the last 20 years, my horses cost a lot less than having a regular social life and I get a lot more pleasure, people have no idea and they certainly cost a lot less than a 2nd home and having kids !!!

Well I smoke and have three horses, must have married a member of the royal family without realising lol! But I did once have a new colleague at work who thought my dad was the Duke of Northumberland as I had horses, until she spotted my £10 bargain work shoes and seen my car!

I tell people that I don't need to go away on holiday, I have a holiday every day at home (mustn't be thinking of winter, lol!) and that all my 'holiday money' goes on the horses. I don't particularly like holidays and certainly wouldn't want to sit at the side of a swimming pool in baking sun but even if I did I can't afford to - we have 4 horses.

Though, if we didn't have horses most of the people on this board could afford to do things which give the illusion of richness, meaning that yes- in order to own a horse you have to have a solid income. So whilst it annoys me that the assumption is there that we'll be sleeping on beds of cash it annoys me to hear people who have horses claim poverty...

This is a pet hate of mine & it always seems to come from people who smoke/drink & go out a lot, which costs more than a horse.
I'm an only child which makes it worse, as obviously that makes me incapable of supporting myself!!

Yup I get this all the time at work, which I turn up for in my dirty 15 year old car. Somepeoples car loans cost more per month than my neds. Take the gym membership, takeaways, nights out and all the mod cons into account and they are plainly better off than me!

Yep, I stagger around under the weight of my wallet!!!!!!!! Since I bought my horse in 1995 I've had a single one week holiday, all my clothes and shoes (apart from undies) come from charity shops, my house is largely furnished from Ebay, my car is 10 years old with 164K on the clock, takeaways are unknown to me, I feed myself on £10 a week and my alcohol consumption is a pint of beer once a week if I'm lucky. I could have been mortgage-free by now if I didn't have a horse.

In all fairness, horses is not a cheap hobby/lifestyle, most horses will costs the owner thousands and thousands through its liftime. So I actually think it is fair enough that people make the assumption that horse owners are reasonably well off (or at least would have been, if they didn't spend all their cash on their horse).

Of course there are exceptions, and many of us spend more or less all our disposable income on the horse... but if you add up the numbers for what a horse costs in a year, it is a pretty significant number compared to the UK average income.

So perhaps the choice is between reasonably well off, and having very strange priorities ;-)

Well, they do say that the fastest way to become a millionare is to start off as a billionaire & then buy horses!! ;)

I get this all the time. so I say the above!! Is really annoying but it is cheaper than a drug habit.

Oh, hang on, horses are addictive aren't they...

My OH's sister does this to me all the time. Her kid likes to come with me to do the horses now and then, and my OH has paid for him to have the odd lesson but every time I go and pick him up she has to mention something to do with the cost of the horses, which I could understand if she ever had to actually pay for any of it.

I LOVE this post..it gets me soooo angry!
One of my friends - does not drive so its 'jess shall we go out for tea' ermm no i have no money ' Well its only about £10' Yes £10 for food then petrol for Me to pick YOU up...£10 towards my horses feet..Reply...'Cant you do her feet yourself?'

:mad::mad:

Oh i love this subject! people assume with me being an only child "daddy" bought my horse. I wasnt lucky enough to have a pony bought for me as a child as my parents couldnt afford the extra costs. So when i could afford it myself i bought one. I also drive a very unpracticle convertible, but its my pride and joy :p, so the soft top and horse - people automatically judge me as some spoilt only child  - no i pay myself!!!!!!

rant over!!! :)

Its not just horses. In the days before paying for a dog walker, I could afford a lovely cleaner. Her big thing was to save up for an annual holiday to the caribbean.

apparently I was her only client who didn't see anything unusual in it or ask how she could afford it "only being a cleaner" followed by "ha ha we must pay you too much"..

My money trots around her field...

^^^ Mine too :D And I wouldn't have it any other way, it's a passion and the way I chose to spend my earnings...

I don't plead poverty, as someone else just said you need a solid income to own a horse. Taking into account livery / feed / insurance / farrier / worming / innoculations / supplements / consumables (hoof oil/mane tail conditioner/shampoo's/fly sprays/ rug cleaning etc), I don't have a lot of spare cash to socialise or buy extravagant things. Most of my presents (Christmas/birthday) are horse related and any other "spare" cash tends to go on her as well... So at least I know what I spent my cash on !! :D

My OH runs his own plumbing business and we have a horse, 2 dogs and 2 kids. I'm sure people must think we are loaded, but like everyone says, it's because we have these things that we are skint! We don't smoke, take drugs or go out very often. I drive a knackered LR Discovery as our only family car and towing vehicle which we got at a bargin basement price. My kids and animals get all of our free income spent on them! I could do with going to see a physio for an old inury but don't really want to spend the money, but am happy to get the back lady out for the neddy!

My OH doesn't charge extortionate prices and will often not even charge some customers anything if they have a 10 minute job up the road, but we do get a bit annoyed when people jib at a fair quote for a job. They don't seem to realise the overheads involved in running your own business and think that he should get paid the minimum wage and make no profit! (And they're usually the ones with a brand new car sat on the drive and an 8 bedroom mansion!)

Ha yes I get this as well, however I live in the posh part of Surrey (I once followed a Maseratti out my village ) so usually people round here have horses and know the costs involved. My family however are not horsey and really baulk at the cost of my 2, both of which are natives and very cheap to keep. I must admit I DO get a holiday every year but only because my family have a holiday home in Crete and all I have to spend is money for flights which I get about 6 months in advance so are very cheap!

I have had it said to me before, It's more of a case of if I didn't have horses I would be on my way to being rich but if I didn't have my horses I would be bored and miserable - I know which I prefer :)
