When someone at old yard told me they'd rescued a horse from the knackers and did I want to share her for my riding pupils I gave a huge inward sigh and thought "NOOOOOO!!"
2 horses duly arrived at yard, thin, weary and old as the hills.
Both had apparently been riding school horses for the tinies and had been sent on to knackers to make way for younger, sprightlier horses.
I checked mare out... apart from being skinny and woolly she had a bit of rainscald and was unshod, BUT she was sound and her limbs were clean. I spoke to owner to see what I might get lumbered with and she wanted half livery fees paid and I'd get to use her as often as I liked for lessons... Hmmm, I thought.. probably not very often (being an old girl and me NOT being a heartless work-'em-into-the-grave kind of person)
Anyhoo, I couldn't find anything glaringly wrong with her so I asked for a week's trial.
Mare was ridden by nervous 9 year old yesterday. I took it gently, gave her lots of breathers and breaks and she was a TOTAL star!! She walked, trotted and cantered on both reins and popped a tiny fence. I'm smitten!
Am trying her again tomorrow with another child but she might be a keeper
Anyhoo... this is her... Her name is Alba and she's NOT a great beauty, but she's soooo sweet, I adore her already. Hope to post some MUCH better 'after' pics in a few weeks.
I refuse to show any interest at ALL in the camera!
