Was enjoying a nice evening hack with a friend tonight when we spotted a couple cantering fast towards us, they slowed to a very fast trot as they reached a few metres away but clearly had no plans of walking.

I called out "Could you walk past us please?" in a normal non aggressive manner but they stared at me and kept on coming so I called again "Could you walk please?" a little firmer this time.

The woman on the second horse yelled back "Have some respect, he's deaf" to which I replied, "The respectful thing is to walk past strange horses if you meet them on a hack." Again I didn't yell, I wasn't aggressive or anything.

At this point she completely lost it, kicked her horse into a gallop and as they sped off she yelled back "Look at you, you can't ride. If you're scared of your horse you shouldn't ride it out in the open. Miserable Cow!"

G to his complete credit walked calmly onwards through the whole situation, stayed in a nice light contact and didn't even look sideways.

I have very a very specific reason why I asked them to walk today but I don't feel the need to go into it. Fair enough if you're on a hunt ride or going cross country schooling but this was a public bridleway in the local village. I could have had a young or nervous horse, I might have been a nervous rider. I always slow down to a walk when I meet people I don't know, I'm actually a confident rider on a gem of a horse but I still don't think there was any need for the rudeness.

Tsk!! Bloody chavs!! Horses are so cheap, everyone can afford them now...

 What a muppet! I wouldn't even give her a second thought. She is clearly mad as a box of frogs. How on earth would you know someone trotting towards you on a horse is deaf? You were right in stating that it was in fact her and her fellow rider who lacked manners!

Pah! Honestly, some people aye?

Fluffing silly tart! I have always walked past other horses, it's common sense. Had a similar confrontation with a pratt like that a few years ago.

Count to 10 and keep breathing!

That is apalling behaviour, I had a run in with a chap from a nearby yard who gallops around our shared tracks even on concrete hard ground. When I confronted him, at least he had the grace to apologise.

Blooming idiots!!! Well done for staying calm OP- I'd have probably done something stupid like gallop after her to make a point lol (or not, but that would make a brilliant point to the imbeciles ;))

:eek::eek:

Some people are shocking! Don't let it bother you, it is clear who is sadly lacking in manners - and it isn't you at all.

No excuse for being so rude. :p

Also, unless you are psychic, how would you know someone was deaf - from a distance, on a horse heading towards you at speed?!?

I genuinley just stick my tounge out or pull a face at comments like that :P

Out on my horse the other week on a bridle way a lady with some dogs had a go at me telling me my horse shouldnt be out, "get out of my b***y way", yadda yadda....
I had great delight sitting on a bench opposite her in the picnic area later and watching her miserable face pout as I fed the pone a sandwich with a huge grin on my face while he had a constant fusses from passers by.

Dont take it personally, some people out there just have issues.. Put a big grin on your face and ignore it.
xxx

How rude  Some people nowadays, if you're not going to respect people, go live in a box on your own, stupid woman
Atleast you can say that you were calm and didn't react, and acted with respect towards the other person, unlike this person clearly seemed not to :/

Just a bit miffed it took the edge of a perfect evening. I don't understand some people...

Glad you are ok though and good boy G!!

I think you need a glug of sherry, have a good ol' moan about it and reflect on your good manners.

I, sadly, would have thwacked her across exposed parts with my schooling whip.

Lol tallyho!!!

Maybe incorporate the two ideas- gallop after her brandishing your whip and thwacking it merrily in her direction :D :D :D

Lol, in that I have a 17.2hh black gelding who bears an uncanny resemblance to the Lloyds Stallion that would be quite an impressive sight. Do you think I should add in a war cry as well for good measure?

Lifes too short for worrying about ignorant b*****s like her. Its just aswell ur horse behaved as if u'd of fallen would she of stopped to help. i doubt it. Human race is disgraceful sometimes.

Happened to me once :(

I was on a young green horse, and he hadn't been hacking alone for long. Walking along a nice bridleway ( don't tend to canter there as it has lots of bends and normally busy with dog walkers)...turned the corner and 2 women on big grey hunters were galloping towards me....I was fully high-vized and could see that they were not going to stop!!!

I had to move out onto the crops, they slowed down into a canter to go past then galloped off whilst laughing! My poor horse was doing his nut and they turned around and shouted "learn to ride love!"

How rude.

My Ex once did the same as C&C's suggestion when we encountered a road racing cyclist on a bridle path. Cyclist shouted abuse at us as we meandered along, so Ex took off and cantered after him on his eventer, who was loving the chance of a hooley. Ex looked down from his horse who was now frothing at the mouth in excitement and said,' Don't be so rude, this is a ******* bridle path'. Cyclist looked up, had the fear of God in his eyes and peddled madly to escape.
On Lookers were wetting themselves and gave him a round of applause.
