On Friday I took my horse in for the farrier. She started to play up when he was nailing the shoes on. (not like her but she had sore feet after taking a shoe off earlier in week) and he asked if she could have some hay to eat to settle her down.
So she got a small amount and before we know it she started curling her lip and occassionally stuck her head out and looked to be straining her muscles. I said to my OH that I thought she was chocking an everyone said she wasnt and was fine. However she kept on with the same symptoms and I kept saying something wasnt right. My OH and YO both then saw her do it and said I was right and to phone the vet. There was only a couple mins between me saying to them and them noticing but it felt like ages to me.
So phoned the vet and he gave me some advice to try and help her which I went off and did and it passed. My mare had food that looked to be going down slow and it scared the **** out of me. Never had anything like that in my life. Vet told me to keep a eye on her so she was kept up at the stables for the night and she did it once more and then was fine. So I spent the night checking on her but thankfully she was fine for the rest of the night but the vet phoned a few times to check she was still ok.
This morning she seems to be fully back to health and normal. But over the weekend she looked fine but ate less than normal.
So hopefully we are back on track and the poor lass wont go through it again.

Think it's even worse when it's your own as well - one of the diddlies (sorry, foals!) at our yard choked a few months ago and was fairly calm and could help out as owner was (understandably) distraught. Two months later when my old boy had the same problem (although was decidedly less of a drama queen about it!) I became a jibbering wreck!
