I’ve had a strange week. I have a horse with pastern dermatitis (I posted it on here) and after trying everything I could I’d booked the vet for Monday. I arrived yesterday morning to find said horse on three legs! I know it can make them sore but not that sore! Vet was changed to yesterday and spent a good hour poking, prodding and cleaning. Nothing was found, so we decided the leg could be a red herring and it was hopefully an abscess This morning I came to find puss running down her hoof from the coronet band ?. Now only horsey people know how wonderful a sight this is. I was just celebrating, quite loudly when my feed delivery came. The poor driver looked quite bemused as I hadn’t heard him arrive?.
So Thankyou horse, you don’t do things by half! That’s a bigger vet bill than I wanted or expected. No antibiotics for the leg because of the abscess and no poulticing of the abscess because of the leg. ?

What a relief.

As you can't poultice you could try a couple of things. 1, if there is a decent hole for the abscess, put diluted iodine in a syringe and clean out the abscess by squirting the liquid in. Or 2, if the hole is too small for that method tub the hoof daily in diluted iodine. You can try to get the level to cover the hoof but not really go on the skin if you are worried that your horse would dislike that due to sore skin.
