Some well to do old woman was stood next to me choosing carrots when she turned to me and said, you have quite an offensive smell about you!! So I simply said, well maybe you should try shoveling horse s**t all day and see how you smell. Maybe you should try it, after all it gets you through the ques at the checkouts quicker!

HA, thats one to me!!!!! :D

very witty!
Horse pong can be quite offensive to non horsey (and horsey) people so I would tend to keep quiet and move on. Its not to everyones taste.

Wow. I'd have told her that, while I had the option of showering, she would forever be rude and ignorant. There's frequently people honking of BO in the Tesco by me but I've always managed to get on with my life without being a cowbag about it. Some people...

honestly.... i hate standing next to stinky horse people!!

its ok to smell like a horse down the yard, but not at shopping! lol!!!

no offence meant but the lady was rude saying that !! haha :D

I bought a saddle pad on ebay and had it delivered to my sister's address. She opened it to check it was OK and said it stank. When I saw it I didn't think it stank at all, so you're right; horse odours smell different to different people. Personally I would've just said. "Yep, sorry about that" and left it at that, but if you want to make horse people out to be smelly AND rude, then yay, well done :)

In our local Co-Op the staff have serious personal hygiene problems! I'd much rather have a whiff of 'eau de chevaux' than that!;)

I think I would have just apologised with a smile and an explanation... enough people think us horsey folk are rude and stuck-up as it is. And to be fair, even *I* think I stink after some days at the yard... my poor mum almost gags when I get in the car with her!

I think you must live near me.....I agree, it's quite normal in Cumbria to wear wellies 90% of the time!

i live in cumbria too, and yes, i always see the farmers in tescos, with their wellies and overalls, most shops in cumbria have lots of people in mucky wellies and horsey stuff, i will admit when i go shopping with my mum, sometimes i have just had my lesson on java and i go in my horsey stuff , its comfortable!!

I would have told the women to mind her own business and tell her to try shovelling s**t all day

I know I stink after I have been down the yard, so I do avoid going to Tesco's before changing. OH dragged me straight there once and I ended up apologising to the lady on the till - she very politely told me she couldn't smell anything.... now I know that wasn't true :D

I love the smell of my yard coat, but my kids moan and groan when they have to go anywhere near it. ;)

Golly, how rude! I'd never sat that to anyone no matter how they smelled! Funny tho, nobody in Tesco said I smelled or was disgusting when I puked up in the aisle one day, they all just walked the other way! :p

I've been told many times i stink by my friends but i honestly can not smell it anymore seen as most of my clothes get worn around horses! Me and my friend are always up at her horse and we have even both gone clothes shopping after going straight from the yard we cant smell it, it doesnt bother us and other people should just mind there own business :p at least we dont stink of cabbages, old farts or fags!!

lucy you dont smell of horse or maybe as im immune to it now as i smell of horse constantly too :)

I just went to the local Chinese on my way back from yard, left my jacket in the car as it was a bit high and was paranoid about my grubby hands but stood alongside so many filthy builders and workmen any aroma I was giving off would have just added to the blend and my dirty jeans just faded into the general picture!

I couldn't think of anything worse than going shopping smelling like horses, and I were shopping and stood next to someone smelling I'd be quite annoyed too.
Some smells are gross to people, obviously horsey people don't mind horsey smells (although I try not to go out smelling horsey!!!) but you have to understand that standing next to someone who stinks isn't pleasant.

RTE does speak the truth - but equally, the lady in the supermarket didn't have to be so rude to you either. Nobody's perfect.

I think I would have ignored her comment.

When my children were younger and I'd go straight from the field to pick them up from school I'd hold open my arms for a cuddle, they'd run towards me then swerve at the last minute to avoid me. Their looks of disgust said it all :D

I quite regularily wander around Tesco in breeches and boots. Yep, get stared and etc, but couldnt give a dam. I reckon I smell a dam sight better than some of the chavs that frequent that store.

Indeed, how do some people always find the money for beer, fags and a dirty great couple of dogs but the budget never stretches to a bar of soap!

As for the old dear I think I'd have said, better to smell of hard work and horse pee than smell of your own!
