I have just had an email from Equestrian Clearance offering GPA liquidation stock.

Forgive my ignorance - but what does that mean?

Are they going out of business?

I've always wanted a GPA helmet - but they are sooo expensive. Do I need to pick one up now?

I just spotted this - and last week I saw some VERY cheap on ebay - and didnt bid in case they were fake!! Now I wish I had, I dont think any went for over £100- obviously someone else had got hold of some liquidated stock earlier - or of course GPA where hoping to pull in some cash quickly before the liquidators moved in?

Either way I wish I had bid! Far less than EQ's prices - hardly a give away are they?

Well according to my OH (who knows more than I do about these things) it is the stock that is seized as assets when a company goes bust, basically. And then is sold by the officially appointed liquidators at any price they can get. They have no real interest in the usual selling price, only raising money quickly and efficiently to set against the money that the liquidated business owe elsewhere.

Much like when a mortgage company re-possess a house - they sell it as quickly as they can, with no interest in true value, just getting back the money they are owed.

....I think!:confused::o

Personally I wouldn't buy or wear one at all, they don't have a safety standard so you may as well ride with a paper bag on your head.

I have one and so does hubby. They are BOTH Kitemarked so this is not strictly true.
I think the earlier ones are not to British standard due to the peaks I was told.

Awful hats. Sorry! They arent well made and have a nasty habit of falling apart.

But they look cool

The latest model has EN1384 standard, the lowest for safety testing in the world as opposed to the Protector which has Snell, the highest safety standard, sorry but not worth the risk IMO.

I love mine so much I got a new one too, now have 2 exactly the same!

I've come off in mine multiple times and it's done the job, one of the only makes of hats that fit me properly, meets standards as far as I know and looks great!

I've had mine for 4 years now and it's still in perfect condition!

Even my mam has started wearing my gpa instead of her champion!

I'd never have anything else, love mine to bits :D I've competed internationally in mine and it's never had any saftey standard problems soo....

Well worth it in my opinion! :p

Mines Kitemarked and compete with it no problem both riding club teams and BSJA

I agree there is no problem with competing with one of these hats within the rules, but why would you choose to wear something with such a low safety standard & so giving yourself reduced protection? Same as the picture posted below, again EN1384, lowest safety standard in the world. Its down to personal choice, but a close friend of mine is still recovering from a brain injury sustained in a riding accident, & yes she was wearing a hat, but this is why I feel so strongly that people should check out the level of protection their chosen hats give them, kitemark means nothing really unless you research & understand exactly what it means.

Surely if the hat is 4 years old & you have fallen on it multiple times then it should be replaced? Hats do not require a safety standard for international show jumping competitions so why would there be a problem with the safety standard? The problem will be when the hat doesn't afford you the protection you need as it has such a low safety standard, a simple google of EN1384, PAS015 & Snell will give you the information you need.

I mentioned that I had bought a new one. My point was that there are a lot of international riders who wear them and at many shows they actually check hats and horses boots.

I'm more than happy with my hat and it does the job it's made to do. It has saved my head more than once and I have nothing wrong with the safety standard of it. I love my gpa and wouldn't have anything else anymore :)

Would never wear one when ive seen the ease that my friends just fell apart. I agree they are gorgeous looking hats but not worth the risk
