We are thinking of getting some sort of tracking device for our 15 year old daughter to have in her pocket when she goes out hacking alone so that in an emergency her exact position can be pinpointed. I think there are also some devices which as well as offering this safety feature also offer a mapping facility so if you get lost you can find your way home. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of these devices? Are they worth investing in?

There are loads on the market!

My friend uses a dog tracker! found on Inner Wolf website! For her teenager as like most teenagers they are glued to their phone texting all the time! So to have the GPS system works brilliantly.

We use Garmin forerunner 301 left over from my endurance days - that maps everything brilliantly - using OS maps and google earth.

We have mapped the rides and laminated them and then each rider from the yard, writes on their Ride Out white board to say

which ride they are going on

what time they left

what time they should return

their nominated buddy that they are texting to keep in contact with somewhere (so if deviate from chosen route for what ever reason this person can be contacted)

It works a treat - help has been summoned on a couple of occasions! Once being tack failure! YO drove out with a leather collar to bodge together a broken breastplate-buddy texting rider and YO to keep them informed so phone lines still open.

Also hi viz compulsory for horse and rider!
