I have been out for my Dad's birthday which has been so very hard keeping a brave face when I knew what my girl was going through. But I think a few drinks and good company have kept me sane! I got a phone call at 2.30pm from the resident, Mel, saying they really wanted to open her up and if they didn't do it they were worried they would lose her. So I gave my consent for them to perform colic surgery and then waited for four hours for an update!
I have just had the phone call from Mel to say that Grace is up and as she spoke to me she walked past the window (albeit a little reluctantly) into her stable.
Grace had a really bad anaesthetic and at one point they were very worried about her because she was going down hill very quickly. She seemed to stablise herself though and was better towards the end of the operation from what I can gather.
When they opened her up everything was in the correct place, no twists etc, so that was good news. There was no actual impaction, but her small colon was very distended with gassy build up. They released this, and there is no damage to the blood vessels, so no gut has started to die odd which is another good thing. However, they do not know what has caused the gassy build up at the moment. They are looking at it being a possible bacteria which has caused it, such as salmonella causing the colitis.
Now they know everything is where it should be, they can administer pain relief and try to stop the loose droppings that she is producing. She is in intensive care, and still no where near out of the woods yet
They have also taken a biopsy for possible grass sickness, but I don't see how it can be this when she has not been out at grass for over 4 weeks (if not more... probably 5 weeks really) and there have been no previous cases in the area at all.
The vets are phoning me in the morning with an update and I am hoping to be able to go up and see her in the morning some time... I just want to see her and give her a cuddle
Once again, thank you
Today has been one of the wost days of my life... I cannot stop crying when I think about her!
