just been down the yard to lunge grace who iv had for nearly 2 weeks. went and caught her and saw that princes leg was covered in blood and he had cut the front of his hind leg but it was an old cut that has just never really healed and its split open, great i though, he can just be lame he has to have a hole somewhere to. was picking graces feet out to lunge her, was going to get on her for the first time tomoz (shes not been ridden since october) saw a spec of blood on her white sock, looked up and found this..

could have cried at this point, if iv not got enough going on with prince at the mo she had to take a chunk out of her leg, sent this picture to the vet to ask best action and he wants the sides to be stiched 2gether, i had a job interview so he couldnt do it today as he was miles away and i didnt want him to send another vet as i knew it would be the one i dont like so he said the ring him 2moro. but its one of these things that either needs doing straight away or it needs to be left a week, old skin cut away and then stiched, hes out next thursday so said thats an option, but il have it out 2moro to look at it.

Clean it up and put some honey on it twice daily! You'll be amazed at how well it heals!

Bloomin horses hey!! Who'd have em!!

eta? it's on the inside of her leg yeah? if so I'm sure you'll hardly notice it once healed...

yeah its on the inside of her hind, vet has posted me some antibiotics as its very swollen, its just keeping them blooming flies off it! its fairly deep and the skin has just like elasticated back to the edges. good jobs its where it is really coz its likely to scar and im going to show her, so unless the look unde her tummy there not gonna see it! hes coming out next thursday to do princes nerve blocks anyway so if the dead skin needs cutting away and stitching he can do it then which hes happy to do. didnt lunge her in the end coz it just kept bleeding and didnt want sand sticking to it.

looks like shes got a second leg growing at the mo its huge, should recieve anti biotics in the post 2moro so get her started on them. my gelding prince is going on them to as his leg is very swollen.

Poor girl - hope she gets well soon, and that you aren't tearing your hair out too much!
If it's any consolation, be glad it's in a place where it can be stitched - I'm just coming out the other side with my boy after twelve weeks of hell. He cut the outside of his fetlock down to the bone, and as there is no extra skin there it couldn't be stitched, if it makes you feel any better, there follows a breakdown of the reason I am currently so poor!
Dressing changed twice a day, with each dressing consisting of:
1x Soffban plus (£2.20 each)
1x Vetwrap (£3.50 each)
Animalintex (small square, using two a week at a cost of £6.99 each)
Mediplast (using three rolls a week at a cost of £4 each)
Hibiscrub (£7.99 each, have used six since he cut himself)
Vulketan gel (a gel to get rid of mild proud flesh, £70 a tube!! Thank god I've only needed one!)

Add to this a total of THIRTEEN visits from the vet, four tubes of Intrasite gel (£24 each) two rounds of super strength antibiotics, two very large sets of dope, one perfect topline completely wasted away, and a LOT of heartache.

Upside - I'm REALLY good at dressing wounds now.

It WOULD happen to the only horse I have who can't be insured....typical.

oh no :0 glad im not the only person having bad luck. it looked like it had shrunk 2nite, but the piece of skin at the bottom will need cutting away but i think she get away with stitches. but that might change when swelling goes! grace isnt insured, only had her 2 weeks but im not going to insure her for vets fees, im going to put money away each month in an acount and use for vet emergencys, its going to be pointless inuring prince next year coz all his legs will be excluded and his pelvis and god knows what else theyl do. i was going to ride grace for first time 2moro, she hasnt been ridden since october so was looking forward to see what she was like and then found that, got to bandage her lower leg to stop any swelling going down the leg. i might go and get some cut and heal to see if that helps. it all adds up doesnt it, i have 4 vets visits so far in last 6 weeks for princes lameness and will have another one next week for nerve blocks. each nerve block is £50-100 :0. hes had one but didnt show anything so working further down the leg. good job hes insured ;) has you boy recovered now?
