The original figure of 8 noseband does not seem to be as popular now that the mexican version came on the scene.

Yes, the Mexican spreads pressure alot more evenly over a larger area, and doesnt pres the cheeks into the side of the horses face
Much nicer IMHO.

Not sure if this is correct but I'm sure I've heard that the mexican is less effective at stopping the horse from crossing its jaw?

I use a mexican grakle on Jenny for precisely this reason - she can't bear any sort of noseband that presses against her molar teeth.
