Basically the title.
I'm considering getting one for Darcy as 90% of the time he's fine to canter out on hacks etc but when he's behind/ along side he can have a tendancy to fight for his head via shaking his head / pulling / attempting to open his mouth/ cross his jaw.
He's currently hacked in a french link snaffle , with a flash noseband and a martingale but for the other 10% of the time when he gets fed up of me telling him to wait, he'll pee off. :/
At the same time, i'm worried about stronger bits incase he backs off etc from me.

So, would a grackle be more an investment than a stronger bit? And what are your thoughts on them as a whole.

i'll be watching your post as i put a grackle on my mare for show jumping the other week (normally rides in loose ring snaffle and cavesson noseband) previously for show jumping i put a 3-ring gag, cavesson noseband and double reins on.

so used a grackle and loose ring snaffle and she went better than in the gag! not that ive ever seen her cross her jaw or open her mouth

so id like to see what others say

Ah, thats interesting - thanks v much for your reply, as if the Grackle doesn't work i'll be heading down that route, and i really don't want to ! Not sure why , am hanging onto my loose-ring !

If he crosses his jaw to evade, then it sounds like a grackle would be perfect. I've used them a few times with great success, just make sure it is properly fitted so it does not obstruct breathing (I have seen quite a few fitted incorrectly).
 
I've bitten the bullet and ordered one, whats there too loose, especially with ebay around if it all goes to pot.
