My friend has recently had a grade B showjumper, she has never jumped in competion before! at home and she is getting on really well at home been able to jump 1.30 with him at ease ! He has qualified for the hickstead derby and was once sold for £60,000 he was last competed by robert whitikar ! he had over 12month off and now she has brought him back to work she is wanting to compete him ! if she takes affliated she will only be able to jump in the opens or amutuer classes she wants to take him to the unafflited shows to get him started do u think this is unfair will she be allowed ? his name is
ROSCOES MEADOWVIEW 289998 B BAY 17 (est.) 165.0 G

Well, unless the rules at unaff shows explicitly say she can't compete him then she is fine. Trailblazers ban Grade A & B horses from the finals, but allow them to compete in 1st Rounds....i'm not sure about RC and PC rules though

If she wants to jump BSJA though, she can jump anything from 70cms up...as there are loads of opens at these low levels now

ETS: The horse is only part of the equation after all....she still has to learn to ride it and get the results....mind you it sounds from what you say that she is doing that already

Yes I have a Grade A and I can jump him in any opens or amatuer classes, like at a BSJA they sometimes run 90cm, 1m etc amatuer qualifiers.

These are fine to jump

Is that so !? Wasn't aware of that lol!

I've just bought a Grade B and like your friend didn't want to start in big classes. So I started at 75cms and went from there. Tell her not to feel guilty as she is never going to beat all those speed merchant ponies anyway

. Also, there are a lot of graded horses jumping these smaller classes.

Interesting to read this actually as we are just getting a nice Grade A in at ours to sell (although not done much for 2 years) and we were wondering what level of people to aim for as wasnt sure what classes he would be eligle for anymore...good to know they could still do the small stuff...may have to nick him myself lol

I have competed a Grade A at local shows and never had any problems, he had, had a long lay off and i hadn't competed for a while. I think if you went round announcing to all and sundry what he had won you would probably put peoples back up more than anything else. I found it better to keep what the horse had done to myself.

In all honesty the horse is a grade A who was ridden by someone else.
I find it takes a while to gel, and although she maybe on a grade A you find that they have their problems.
Horses usually jumping bigger tracks have no respect for little stuff or find them far spookier (like 75cm has a hidden agenda lol)

TBH i dont think just because you are riding a grade A means its a forgone conclusion you will jump a clear round, let alone win a class.

Totally agree - People expect me to do well on Mac as he is Grade A, but he isnt easy to jump at all and we have only just started to gel. And he had 4 yrs off in the field!

Just because you are on a Grade A/B doesnt mean you will go clear on win a smaller class as BB's says

I jumped an ex Grade B un-affiliated in the Open classes. If I remember rightly it is horse and rider combination that can't have won more than a certain amount of money. For a "novice" on an experienced horse there should'nt be any problems.

UMM i dnt knw what to say really just i dnt think its to fair to be honest but i will update you through the summer and see how she gets on !
Wish i had a grade a to win all the local shows on infact if i had a grade a id be affliating but then thats me maybe its cause i have more experience x

As its been said, you'll prob be surprised that they dont do that well, espec at the smaller stuff. Just be a good sport if they do beat u!!

Why dont you affiliate with the horse you have now, sounds like you do ok?

Have you ever wondered why the horse isn't competing at that level now

Just because a horse is a Grade A doesn't mean it hasn't chucked it in now / suffered an injury / any other reason.

For your information i know of several 'Grade A' horses (as currently registered with the BSJA) who have never even jumped clear round a BN running HC

Remember, any horse that is first registered after it's 7th birthday will automatically be graded as A....it doesn't have to have even seen a pole in it's life before

Aaaa?? you sure? I registered Star for the first time last year and she was 8/9yrs and she is graded as grade c....or am I reading this wrong???

Sorry but i don't think its fair. Someone who buys a horse for 2k and want a chance at unaffiliated shows hasn't got much chance against a graded show jumper! The whole point of unaffiliated shows is for novices!
Riding is already expensive without more pressure being put on people to need to buy more expensive horses just to have a chance of winning at a local unaffiliated show!

I have done a few british novice classes and disco but to be honest i just cant afford it all the time hopefully i will be able to by the winter lets see xx i might end up registering half way through the season if the local shows arnt enough for me i might just stick to the opens x

You sound like youve given up before youve even started.

Okay, I have a horse who is running at OPN level. This means he has to compete against horses that have eventing points or like my boy just won 3 PN classes (not with me).
Now i have been against (competitively) horses who have been round Burghley, Badminton and to the World Equestrian Games!!!
I have managed to beat them, thats only because I know my horse well now, but 3 years ago we didnt gel and he wouldnt even jump a 2ft fence without stopping!

You know your horse, stop dwelling on the fact that your friend is riding a grade A, or you may just find yourself losing out to an underdog, the one with the scruffy pony who was dragged from the field!!

Basically what im saying is, doesnt matter what youre riding! its whose best on the day!!

I dont have a graded horse, but my 4 year old (rising 5) from holland has just had £50 slapped on his card for no reason, even tho i can prove to the BSJA that he has never been competed abroad.

So although Im not out of BN if he does eventually do well, im out of that class sooner than i should... whats fair about that??
