This is my first ever post in breeding, so be kind please!

I am thinking of covering my coloured eventing mare by Free Spirit this year and was wondering if anyone knew much about him?
I really like the Jumbo line, and from what I have seen of his offspring they seem to be talented and have a great temperament.

Anyone have any thoughts or any other ideas?
Need something with quality and to add some bone, but mare is 3/4 TB

Thanks

I have a lovely filly by Free Spirit out of a coloured ISH mare. I am really pleased with her but was a little shocked when she arrived bay!

I have a Jumbo mare and would really recommend anything from his lines. Their temperament is outstanding. I've met a few others aside from my mare and Jumbo is renowned for his temperament, he lets toddlers ride him etc etc. Big stride which I like too.

Tache - Blimey! That must be rare! You'd think breeding 2 coloureds would almost guarantee it!

PERSONALLY whilst I love Jumbo and his sons...Free Spirit is the one that I am least fussy on. He has not yet produced anything outstanding competitively himself....plus, having seen him in person, whilst he is a lovely boy, he is just not WOW....as coloured's go I would say that there are better out there for sure....and as eventing sire's go, there are definitely better out there.

If colouring is a must have, have you considered the homoziygous coloured stallion Sempers Spirit???

BayJosie - I know I was amazed - the mare has had two coloured foals previously, one by a black stallion and that was coloured and the other by Sambertino, coloured too. Super filly but a bit of a shock! Guess she got both the bay/black genes!

With Cavailier Two for Joy on your doorstep Im suprised you are looking over here for a coloured stallion. Anything with Cavailier in the breeding seems to be commercial at the moment.

I have seen him in the flesh several times at events and put it this way if Lucy W was not on his back he would not be getting the results he is. He looks very limited talent wise and would expect him to reach his limit at intermediate.

Much prefer Jigilo who is smart, shown to have the ability and easy to deal with.

yeh I must add actually that my Jumbo mare is quirky as hell, and I remember seeing something from Lucinda fredricks who said the same about Headley Brittainia who is, also out of Jumbo.

I haven't actually seen much of Free Spirit though.

Thanks for the input guys!
Tbh I am looking for something for myself as my next eventer rather than something to specifically sell on.
Not particularly worried if the offspring is coloured, just thought it would be nice!
I am however worried that my mare, whose breeding is entirely unknown, may throw something heavy and hairy legged which is definately not what I am after.
Like the look of Jigilo though!

Any other ideas then? I am completely clueless about the whole subject!

Do you have any pics of your mare???? That would be good to give us an idea on what to go on.

Brit is definitely very sharp. Lucinda originally had her in to sell and she proved too sharp and so, that coupled with a few other reasons meant she hung onto her and competed her herself.

This is her...

She has a beautiful temperament and tries so hard to please, I just need something with plenty of scope and ability, as although she evented to 1*, that was her limit.

Also think I need to add a bit of bone?!

I wouldn't say you need to add bone unless you specifically wanted it.

One stallion I LOVE is Sempers Spirit - www.unitedcolouredstud.com

Brendons have an AWESOME young coloured stallion by Nederland F x a Samber mare who would also be very suitable. He is an out and out jumper!!! Is only a 4 yr old and so a lot of growing up still to do.

This is him:

If you like the look of that specific stud, why not try Jumbo himself?
I do think his offspring are renowned for being a bit ‘quirky’ as we have mentioned here regards our own Jumbo offspring and Little Brit, but they do have great temperaments and fantastic jumpers. Most of his offspring seem to take to Eventing/show jumping etc.
I don’t think you need to add bone to your mare at all. She looks a good sort, she’s just my type 

If neither coloured horse is homozygous (which they obviously aren't) you have a 25% chance of a plain coloured foal (from what I understand!).

I also Love sempers spirit and would consider using him If I bred from my coloured mare again.

I am not overly impressed with Free Spirits BE results yet, I would want to wait and see how he progresses before I would consider using him.

Your mare looks lovely BTW OP

I looked on the CHAPS website about this and on there it says that essentially if you have a coloured stallion and a bay mare let's say (becuase that's what I've got) your chances are 50/50.
You may be right though.

If you are interested we are standing a Homozygous 7/8th Tb verified breeding his Grandsire is The Hoys Puissance winner Sarahs Pride he is only two and we are not taking maidens he is a typical event stamp and has been seen by foxfolly who is on this site and would like to breed something like him for herself on a post I saw on this forum.
we are the business finder on H & H webs site if you want to see him take care

Yes as far as I understand it

Coloured mare and stallion 75% coloured 25 % plain 25% homozygous foal
One parent coloured 50% chance coloured or plain
One parent homozygous coloured the foal will always be coloured

Thanks for all the info!
I know Jumbo is only covering limited mares this year and not sure whether they would like him to cover a coloured ISH of unknown breeding?!
Rumour has it that my mare had a chestnut foal before I got her, as a 3 yr old, so don't think she is homozygous.
It just seems a shame to have such a nice coloured mare and not get a coloured foal, as I will probably hold on to it, and I think they are rather striking!

Arrrrgggghhhh.... I just can't decide!

what about Glenhill gold? very nice coloured eventing stallion

or if not bothered by colour i reccomend rachelle comet, tb, who sired merlin and colleen_miss_tom's missy - rachelle comet may not be the best stallion but he throws very very nice stamps of eventers - you have seen merlin

imo, she seems to have good movement but could be a lot nicer with more, and has the jump but needs the scope you say, so i would be going for a very nice sj stallion... how about arko?

lol

I have seen Glenhills gold quite a few times and whilst a lovely horse I don't think he would bring enough quality to my mare, who may easily throw back to her hairy legged roots!

Sempers Spirit is lovely, a definate possibility!

I have two mares due to foal to Sempers Spirit, both due early May. One mare is a Trakehner, but the other is a big strong Demonstrator mare and I hope Spirit will keep the size down and not add any more bone and improve the quality. My mare will add plenty of power and substance and as she competed successfully both BD and BSJA the foal should be a cracking all rounder.

I will post photos of the foals when they are born so you can see what I got from two different stamps of mare

I have used Country Top Dollar on my mare, Have a look at their website but I don't know if he's what you're looking for.
