As above - can you use the two together?

Horse crosses her jaw so needs the grakle but I think we def. need a standing martingale due to her high head carriage when she gets excited i.e out hunting.

No - absolutely not. The only way would be to add a cavesson noseband as well to attach the standing martingale to - I've seen it done, but it isn't pretty.

Sorry - should have explained, rather than just shouting NOOOOOO.

Because the grakle is a cross- shape, if you attach a standing martingale to it, and the horse chucks its head up, the noseband will be pulled so tight that it will be extremely uncomfortable/painful for the horse - liable to make it panic and do something silly. It could affect his breathing if yanked hard enough, or could in the worst case scenario, break his nasal bone.

Thought so - just that when I was racking my brains thinking of horses that wore standing martingales, they were mostly polo ponies who wore simple cavesson nosebands on top of their drop nosebands so they could attach their standing martingales to something. Couldn't remember whether I'd ever seen one attached to a grakle but didn't think I had.

So we'll add the cavesson and see what happens!!

Thanks.

Don't forget that even with a standing martingale your horse will need enough reach to stretch over a fence otherwise you might end up in a very ungainly heap! You could try a running martingale just shortened a little more than usual or a fluffy noseband maybe?
