grand cherokee

Hi, not a grand cherokee but an ordinary 2005 cherokee - there is a very long thread regarding a recall issued by VOSA that may apply to your vehicle, if you search Jeep Cherokee 2002 - 2007 in both the Tack Room and the Club House there was a major issue with Jeep recalling vehicles, removing towbars and then not fitting new towbars - it took many of us over 10 months before Jeep backed down and agreed to fit new ones.

I love the jeep - it is a great tow vehicle, however if you arer thinking of buying one be prepared to pay a lot for fuel - they are thirsty - and check if your towbar (if it has one) has been either deemed acceptable by the dealership or has a replacement fitted. If you need any further information feel free to contact me

We had a 2004 one. I loved it but it was very thirsty. We spent a bit of money getting it stiffened so it didn't roll quite as much, and I seem to remember we had it chipped as well (which obviously wouldn't have helped the fuel consumption!) although that might have been one of the landrovers we had. It towed very well and was incredibly comfortable to do long miles - many trips up and down to Scotland (we are in the SE)

I kept getting emails from a leasing firm regarding a Jeep, I sent a reply back last week saying "what, after the Diff problems and then the towbar problems" no thanks, they sent me a reply taking me off their list LOL, plus I tried replying to say excellent, and my email bounced back to me, says it all for me.

I had one and loved it. It was thirsty though but being leather and automatic was vey smooth and luxurious. Great towing vehicle.

Pedantic Hmm I'll have to try that for all the emails I still get from them trying to get me to buy a new one.... even after I told them I had got rid of the ****ing thing and bought a Kia Sorento

We've got a 2002 Grand 2.7crd. Love it. Best 4x4 we've had. Tows like a dream, comfortable, fuel economy is ok (better than my old jeeps and previous shogun), and the Grands don't have the recall issues with the towbar that the standard Cherokees do.
It has needed some work but nothing I wouldn't expect a vehicle of its age to need. The engine is a Mercedes engine so parts are easily avail.
I'm a big fan and can see us buying another when this one goes.

We had a 2000 Grand Cherokee and whilst it was a great towing vehicle, it was expensive to keep on the road - servicing and parts. The later CRD diesels were better esp with fuel efficiency

I absolutely adore my grand Cherokee. Had it a good few years now. It is the newer 2006 model, if you can stretch the the newer shape then try to.

This car has it all. It pulls like a tank, is super torquey when needed, is luxurious inside and hides it age well. Loads of space, loads of mod cons - I cant fault it! It is genuinely the best car I have ever had, and I will be buying a newer model when ever this one has had its day. It flies through its MOT every year with no issues. The most I spent was £150 on a new water pump in 4+ years. Can be thirsty, but it is a mighty powerful car, so that is to be expected.

After all the issues and their appalling treatment of owners I would not buy one .
Then I had never really wanted to own a fiat anyhow!!!!

You don't see many of these about and there's probably a reason for that. If I were after a towing vehicle myself, I'd be looking at a Mitsubishi Shogun. Have a look for online reviews - auto trader, what car etc, I find those helpful when researching a car.

hi swirlymurphy, wot engine did it have in do you remember ? did you put different springs on to stiffen it ? regards richard.

We were going to buy one, but after researching issues they have, I found that they seem to have issues with the head gasket after they moved to Chrysler engines. We decided it wasnt worth the risk so didnt get one. Will be thirsty too, but thats 4x4's for you unless you buy brand new. You arent going to avoid that really unfortunately. But going for diesel will make it a bit better obviously.

Yeah probably haha. To be honest, if my family didnt have such bad luck on managing to buy the cars that have big problems, we probably would have still got it. Not everyone has had the head gasket issue, some absolutely love the cars. But yeah, our history with vehicles isnt the best so we dont want to tempt fate again.

Hi - sorry, I have only just seen this. I can't remember but will dig out the info (ie ask husband who remembers all of these things) and will get back to you.

Why would you want one over the RR or shogun you will have the worst of the two rolled into one!
They are serious money pits

It is by far the best car I have ever owned, and will be buying another newer one when this one gets old - and I am a bit of a petrol head! Have bought & sold many cars in the past, and know a wee bit about them.

Of 4x4's I had a BWM X3, which was a horrible car. Very very under powered, felt cheap and rubbish inside, could barely pull a single trailer, and constant mechanical problems. I test drove the big volvo 4x4, it felt awful. My step dad had an X5, that didn't last long. My mum had a newish Range rover, and it had nothing but faults the whole time she has had it.

The jeep is powerful, had absolutely no issues with it, can pull the heaviest of trailers with power to boot, feels luxurious inside, looks fab for its age and is just a pleasure to drive :) I would highly recommend them. I am looking to buy a Chrysler grand voyager as an additional car at the moment :) I've had experience of these in the past and also highly rate them.

The recall for the towbar was for the Cherokee, and not grand cherokee. I had experience with the Jeep wrangler in the past also, it's fun but can be a bit hairy on fast cornering!

We tow a large Ifor Williams and two 16.2 Irish Draughts. Tows really well and a nice car to drive without the trailer. Good interior spec haven't a clue about the engine bit thought !

thanks for reply popsdosh , when i owend rr and shogun 90's ish ! fuel not a prop ! but when you have to take fuel ect into consideration for the service i provide its nice to get some proper advice on motors you have not had dealings of ! which i am getting some very good comments from people that know ! kind regards richard.

Sorry to disagree but the Grand Cherokee was affected by the towbar recall:
