Grand National - Under Starter's Orders

The winner has just jog jogged and shoogled his way out of the winners enclosure so clearly he is fine and dandy just now! He'll sleep well tonight!

Aw bless, the retired GP trainer is choked. Well done to him and the owner, not forgetting the jockey and most of all a brave horse. Raising a glass to Pineau du re

They do an official announcement of horses and jockeys a little later when they run the segment I think called "where they fell". All OK at the moment and hope that continues.

Early indications are all horses are okay.

Maybe Battle Group is the new Chaninbar (one of the most hilarious racehorses of the last few years)

Congratulations to all involved with Pineau de Re

Good national- lots of excitement, yet all the horses home safe. I think you will agree it is what we all wanted. Find facebook so annoying- loads of people who don't even go near horses making stupid comments about cruelty etc.

Completely agree. Don't comment about something you know nothing about! One day of the year they become horse lovers... Yet I bet day to day they don't even think about the REAL cruelty some horses go through.

dominobrown I know what you mean. I had people saying how horses are forced to race. I put a post saying I hope they saw battlegroup at the start and no response. :rolleyes3:

Glad to hear all horses are fine and made it home safely! Although, only 18 out of 40 finished according to twitter!

I have more respect for people on here who don't like racing, but own and ride their own horses. Although I don't always agree at least they 'know' a bit, but people who I know literally have never been near a horse making sweeping statements really annoys me.

And... if you are not horsey, don't like racing etc why watch it- all you are doing is supporting the sponsors by upping ratings!

That's the 2nd time in the last decade that a horse has refused to race - King John's Castle did it a few years ago. 2nd the year before, did a leg, came back for the National then goes no where. Can't really blame him lol!

Well I've just been given a right dressing down about supporting animal cruelty by betting on the Grand National. Perhaps I should send them some information about the Max Factor and Maybelline products they use every day that are tested on animals? On second thoughts I'll just give up, you can't 'win' against someone so misinformed and narrow minded. I have absolute respect for people to make their own choices and have their own opinions but crikey just let me do the same!

Just watching the detailed re-run, I missed the bit where Tidal Bay took the leader into the rails, wowsers that was a close call!

I've always said you cannot make a horse do something it doesn't want to! A big animal with its own mind... There is no forcing involved!

It's very telling that the front runners appeared to be riderless and loving life. I'm just waiting for that token idiot on my fb feed to state that they were running with fear...

Dunlin- I agree!
I think the system with the loose horses worked well this year. In some respects, it is good that people are constantly questioning safety of the horses, which lead to the run outs and areas for loose horses and other improvements around the course. I think they are finally getting the balance right on the national.

-Facepalm-

Running with fear and the ones behind that stopped themselves and were caught were too petrified to continue ey? :p

They have learnt a lot at Aintree in recent years. The year Tonto ran it was a very hot day and they had drafted in extra helpers purely to pour water over the horses as soon as they pulled up at the end. Jockeys were instructed to be off asap regardless to be watered down. It was nice to see today loads of people still around drowning horses in water at the end of the race regardless of the weather. After 4 odd miles they really do need it.

All horses looked to finish well, nothing excessively tired. Nothing made to finish that wasn't capable of it. Nothing battered home. And a very good race to the finish. The horses flew over the last compared to climbing over in other years.

A good year for the race.

One jockey in trouble for not pulling up his tired horse who did fall late...
Good race, my poor horse was the one that got carried out, he was jumping brilliantly too! Just can't write the script can you? Also had AP's Double Seven, looked a fab ride. Yayy, 3rd! Leighton Aspell, so cool. Good jockey, and Katie Walsh, how did she stay on?

As for the 'non-starter'! Can't lead a horse to water....

I wonder if that lost shoe at the start really was the winners??

Naughty Tidal Bay running that other horse out. Being 13 years old he obviously knew which way was home and no flimsy plastic rails were standing in his way! :) Tidal Bay did a fab jump over the fence before deciding he was off though. Made me chuckle a bit although sad he got hampered early on as I took a punt on him! Bet the jockey who he took out with him was less than amused!

I liked those little corral type areas they seemed to have at the side though. You could see it in shot at one point as a loose horse ran in joining two others who'd got there earlier and just appeared to be 'spectating'! Thought having that was a great idea!

Glad that they all came back ok.

Seen a lot on FB about 'cruelty'. Kept out of it this year as learnt my lesson the other year trying to defend racing! Some post going on about how its cruel and generally how the whole industry is breeding thousands of horses, most of which end up as dog food etc etc (blah blah!) and that instead of betting you should donate the money to a horse charity! Had to resist the urge that over breeding and cruelty is common for ALL animals (puppy farms spring to mind!) and did feel like pointing out the "charity" leaders who have been convicted for animal cruelty!
