My mare has a GCT on her ovary so is having the opp to have it out, I wondered if anyone had any experience of it and recovery period, how long until she is back on form and in full work. Also did it make a big difference after.

Our mare had one removed three years ago. It was huge... The size of football when drained! Had it removed under GA midline op. Was pretty sick for about 10 dayos. Had
about six months off but is now back in full work, ODEs, hunting, team chasing, dressage and everything else. Pm if you need any more info.

Mine had her left ovary removed four and a half weeks ago! at leahurst. She was diagnosed with GCT, it turned out afterwards to be a different type of tumor (leuteoma) - that is very very rare but with same symptoms as GCT. She was starved by me from 6am on the monday, I took her up there for appt at 11am, they checked her ovar and admitted her - she was then starved for a further 48hrs.(I specifically asked for gastroguard to be adminstered - they dont normally) - op was late due to emergency colic case, so was starved for 60 hrs in total. Had op - her tumor was bit bigger than tennis ball so not huge - had standing op, she recovered well, bought her home on the friday (originally said follwing monday - but did so well) - did 3 weeks box rest with walking in hand - was so calm - was unbelievable - constantly on my guard as kept assuming she would leap on me like before - but literally like different horse. - wound swollen after 5 days at home - had vet and was ok - bit of bute. then had staples removed (24 of them after 10 days ) Then as of last saturday she can go out on small paddock turnout (15ftx20ft paddock!) only going out during day at moment as nothing next to her til the others move from summer grazing and so going out sedated during daytimes and coming in at night (only reason going out sedated as first day she jumped the electric fence!!! - so clearly not feeling sore! - She will be back in work in two weeks - so 7 weeks out of work - she will start in walk and gradually build back up - she was competition fit before op and very well muscled and has lost some of it but still looks ok.

Best thing I ever did and although not ridden yet so not sure how her attitude will be under saddle, but so far so good.

thank you both for your help, has made me feel loads easier about sending her and to know not that long until back in work is also really positive. kezimac your mare is lovely and thanks for the pics.

no probs - and dont worry - i did !!! and really didnt have to. Liverpool looked after her well and she has bounced back really well, and is far sweeter in her temperment now - obviously not ridden yet but so far so good!!!
