Why can't you feed grass cutting? (i know it can give them colic, but how/why?)

Can you feed it if it is left for a few days?

imagine the stuff you get in your lawnmower collection box,its all compacted up and gets hot and starts to steam. not good in a gg belly.

Put your hand in a bag of lawn clippings right down to the bottom and you will see why this is not a good idea! x

it heats up and starts to ferment. someone chucked a load of grass cuttings in my mares field the other day thinking that they needed more grass. i was not a happy bunny!!! Grass cuttings are a BIG no no

No one has mentioned the other factor yet, that apart from turning into silage it also compacts into balls and can easily cause choke. My Vet says that in summer he is frequently called in for that reason and he gets very cross about it.

I wish I could feed it, I have 2 acres of lawn around the house and yard (not allowed to graze the horses on it) and it really HURTS to see the amount of grass I throw on the muck heap weekly! I do let it dry and make short hay for the rabbits for winter if the weather allows though.
