Just wondering if it's something I can do myself with off the shelf weedkiller, and how long I'd need to keep the ponies out.

You’d have to fence it off if the ponies graze it.

Otherwise mowing or strimming.

Glyphosate, sold as Roseate, available online, applied with hand held sprayer - killaspray type sprayer. Will need repeated application perhaps once a month in the growing season.
