Had anyone come across any sort of supplement that helps with grass glands? My horse often suffers in the summer but because he was in during the day it had usually gone down by the time I wanted to ride in the evening. However, he has recently been coming in with a face so big that his headcollar won't do up, riding is impossible as he can't breathe if he is anywhere close to being on the bit!

We have short but green grass and he is an extremely dedicated eater... he does have hay in the field but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I want him to have as much turnout as is available but I would also really like to ride my horse.

Just interested if anyone has found anything that helps? I really don't want to muzzle or reduce turnout.

Bumping to see if anyone has any suggestions to help with grass glands apart from taking them off grass as mine is currently really struggling with them and only able to be out for a few hours at a time.

I'm interested as well, one of mine sometimes comes in looking like a hamster but then they go down by the afternoon and it isn't every day either.

There was a thread on fb where someone suggested i think vitamin B? I haven't tried it yet though. I keep meaning to give Trinity Consultants a call to ask if they have anything suitable.

Thanks, I'll have a google and search on FB and see what I can find.

I use antihistamines for sweetitch, but Archie was coming in with a huge face from late Feb so I put him on them early. No grass glands since. From what I understand they are a reaction to something they are eating, or to tree pollen, which is now out in force.

15 .3hh heavyweight cob, 10 a day currently.

Is the horse new to your grass/ turnout? Both of mine that had trouble were ex racers who weren't used to as much grass and were new to me - once we were out of that initial flush they didn't seem to have a problem and one never had a problem again and sadly I lost the other before we could see long term over the years. In short though no, I didn't find any supplement that helped.

I may try antihistimine, I did ask my vet but she didnt seem too enthusiastic but said i could give it a go. We are currently trying to rule bits out- Ive fenced off access to hedges for now.

She has been here since last summer and had always been glandy, but last week came in like a moon head. She had a shot of steroids yesterday as was even swollen inside her mouth.
I have bought some herbs that apparently help the lymphatic system. Marigold, cleavers and nettle just because why not can't hurt to try.

I hope the herbs work - do let us know. If not antihistamines are a very cheap thing to try - I got 180 for £4.
Will do! I’m going to get some antihistamines aswell anyway.
She’s been out a bit today and even after the steroids and the hedge fenced is glandy but better her actual mouth isn’t all swollen tonight.
Herbs arrived and added 🤞 they look and smell lovely!
