Grass Glands- what are your experiences?

Vet has told me my 2 have Grass Glands- I feared Strangles even though there have been no other symptoms or a temp.

I've never had a horse with this and now I have 2! Will they get it every spring grass season?

Looking back over last few days its worse after rain- is this right or coincidence?

Will they clear when the grass quality drops?

They come in for 6 hours a day- for weight management and the lumps have gone down considerably in that time but I don't want to keep them in 24/7

Are there any lick or supplement i could get that may help?

Am i ok still to ride trying to get mine super fit for our 1st ODE next month?

I was so relieved that the Vet said it was nothing to worry about I forgot to ask all these questions so though I'd ask HHO before calling vet again in the morning.
 
Mine gets it when the grass is growing a lot, so particularly high in sugar. Also weirdly they came up massively just coming out of winter, it had been frosty and grass was just starting to grow so think that set them off. He soon settles once the grass isn't so lush. :)
 
My horse have had it (more often than not) and it has never caused him any problems whatsoever. Luckily, the first time it came up, it coincided with his vaccinations, so my vet diagnosed it and said that there's no need for concern.

I think it's caused by over-stimulation of the parotid salivary glands or in reaction to something in the grass, and the swellings are usually there after prolonged periods of grazing.
 
My old mare ha them all her 28 years, they came and went with the grass, no ill effects at all. Sometimes looked alarming though.:)

Thank you I see you are competitive too- do you continue to ride- does it effect their breathing. Ride my boy today and I'm building up the canter work in prep for next month and his breathing was audible after the second canter but probably because I'm being sensitive, it was quite warm too.:confused:
 
My share and her pal both have them most of the time, especially the older mare, hers is like a huge marble! It's never affected them at all.
 
My lad comes in with them all the time do bad sometimes his whole face is swollen too, don't worry about it :-)
