Appy slipped her muzzle this morning ( I say slipped but she lay down rubbing her head on the floor until it came off....).

I was exercising the other one so she had about 30 mins on long grass until I called time.

Huuuuge grass glands this evening. She looks very uncomfortable. I'm not very sympathetic. Is it always grass? My hayfever has kicked off horrendously with the hawthorn this year so I was wondering if it is grass or something else has triggered them. Do antihistamines bring them down if she's bad tomorrow?

I have never ever seen them in my gelding until this year and was worried until I found out grass mumps was a thing!! (Of course I googled "lumps under throat" which obviously only seemed to bring up strangles and/or imminent death) :rolleyes:Vet said they have come across loads of people seeing them for the first time in their horses this year

I also had a panic when 1 horse was puffy under the chin and then the other as well the next day - never had these on any horse before but theres a tree in their paddock (I think it’s a willow) that has produced an ALMIGHTY amount of pollen this year so after I discovered that grass mumps can be caused by pollen it twigged 🙈 they seem happy enough in themselves mind

She tried again this morning! If you didn't know what she was up to it would be a colic scare. Up and down, odd rolling, rubbing her head on the ground - but I'd tightened it and she couldn't quite get the right angle. Human 1 : Appy 0 🤣

Much less pronounced puffy bits today so didn't give her anything but I've got piriton for my pollen sufferer so if they're up tonight then I'll see if it helps.

She's never had them before and it's not the first time she's gorged on spring grass so I guess something environmental

They seem to be one of those things that occasionally flare up and look awful. I highly recommend flexible filly muzzles with a leather head collar for clever “accidental” removers! Mines been a lifesaver (literally)

Mine gets them a lot and it never seems to bother him! He gets them for 1 or 2 weeks a year and then they just go so I'm guessing it is some sort of mild allergy
