I am on DIY livery and currently work 9-5 although will be starting new job in London working 8-5 soon
Its okay, during the winter I get up early and go down and muck out and turn out. Currently I get down the yard about half 5 (although it will be about half 6 soon), its not ideal riding in the dark but we have two floodlit menages so am lucky that I can continue schooling and SJ throughout the winter. I will be arranging for someone to bring my horse in when I start work in London though - think I am going to turn a friend's horse out and she brings in.
I spent last year working 9-5 and then went to do the horse after and before, it was fine as we had a nice school and then there is always weekedns for hacks! The yard i was at was full of people with full time jobs so it was very sociable and busiest at about 6 in the eve. Its not a problem, lots of people do it!
Yes it gets dark and wet and miserable, but its not really owning a horse if you cant get muddy and see the funny side of life!
PLUS when the eves get gradually lighter every day it will excite you like it excites noone else!!!
I'm on DIY and work 8:30am - 4:30pm, I don't get to the yard until about 5:10pm ish. I do all my mucking out and chores in the morning, and in the evening I just sort out his hay for the night, groom and ride. Someone brings my pony in for me at about 4pm ish during the winter and he lives out in summer.
I don't mind it at all really, as long as i have a nice floodlit school to use during the week I'm happy. I honestly don't think I would choose to have full or part livery even if I could afford it because I quite like doing the chores!!

Oh God I thought it was only me. It's great actually being able to see your horse when you muck out in the morning and not having to wash mud off by feel!
Two of us on our yard work full time and have 3 horses!! Usually there by 6.30, muck out and turn out the one that is in, hay the others. Leave by 7.30 to get home and leave for work by 8.15.
Leave work at 5.30, usually at yard by 6.15, fetch in and either ride or lunge 3 days a week, he has Monday and Friday off.... Feed, check over and hay the others, get home by about 7.30 usually!! It can be done, luckily we have a floodlit school, you just need to be good at early mornings and have an understanding OH!
I'm on DIY Liveryi work 8.30am to 5pm, Mon-fri basically get up to yard at 6.15 ish, feed turn out muck out etc, and go to work, get back to yard for about 5.20pm bring in, ride feed etc. We are lucky though cos we have a lovelly flood lit school. YO will bring in for me if weather is bad etc. so works in quite well however i do feel guilty some days as she is first out in the field and last in a night, but saying that It does her good and she has learned to wait quite patiently knowing that she will get in eventaully.
I work full time, and we have four on DIY , stabled at night Oct till April
It takes me about an hour and a half every morning to feed, change rugs, turn out and muck out , and have somehay in the stables ready for teatime. Paddocks adjacent to yard, so no long walk to turn out.
If I get to the yard by 6 or 6.30 pm, it's and hour or so again to bring in, feed and check over, feed and have feed ready for next morning.
With just one to do, half an hour or so am and pm for essential chores would allow time for riding before or after work.
Helps if you have less than half an hour drive to yard and if you have changing facilties so can go direct yard-work-yard.
yep I have always been DIY with all of the horses I have had, im on DIY now and work 9-5, it is difficlut in the winter when it comes to riding as I can only ride at the weekends however I am lucky that my friend does the mornings and I do the evenings so I only have to go out once in the week. But im the same as tinker88 I like to deal with my horse.
I'm on diy and work until 5.30pm, get to the yard for about 6, I do the mucking out and turning out etc about 6.30am and also let my friends horse out as well.
She will usually bring him in for me in the evening and I do the rest, after I have ridden .
when I first had him I faffed about but now have a lovely routine in the mornings , I then go home have a shower, take the kids to school, then I go to work, feeling nice and awake, its at the other end of the day that I get tired, about 9.30pm I'm nodding !!!.
I've always been DIY and work full time in London. I've got two, but they are at home now. Down at the yard 5.30ish muck out, swop rugs, chuck out, then lay beds put hay in make up evening feeds and back indoors by 6.30ish. In the evening I don't get home until 7.00pm so the horses just have to wait, they don't seem to mind but this year has been a bit drier than last year.
I work 9.30 - 5.30 and my yearling is on grass livery with 3 other horses. I get up early to feed/ groom and leave my yard just after 8. The other 2 owners of the other 3 grass livery's poo pick & Hay twice daily in the week as I don't have time and I poo pick & hay at the weekends. Works pretty well for me.
yep, i work 9-5 and have my horse on DIY..
am up at 6am to walk the dog, up yard by 6.50am to feed, muck out and turn out.. back about 5.15pm to catch in and ride.! of course its harder in the winter but it doesn't bother me.! i'm lucky as i only work 5 mins away from yard, in the winter i come up at lunch time to catch in so he is not out til its dark and so he can have some lunch. we have a floodlit school too so i can ride during the week in the winter..
wouldn't have it any other way.!!
Have always done this...being a control freak, I always want to do my horse myself.
This year has been bliss as he is at home now but I have never had anywhere to school or exercise after dark (either here or previous yard) so his workload in winter is pretty slim. Though he has 12 acres to charge around in with his field mate so he's keeping himself pretty fit.
It's hard work morning and night but I wouldn't have it any other way.
The winter is tought but more down to lack of opportunity/desireto ride when shattered cold and wet.
I get to the yard at just gone 6 and then go back after work. Admittedly now I do mine and another in the mornings and a friend does evenings so it works well.
I have a yard and most of my clients are DIY. Included in their weekly DIY is me putting their breakfast in and doing the morning turnouts. If the owner wants to turnout that is no problem at all - only rule is first on the yard feeds everything so no horse left standing in with nothing to eat. I find it easier to have the horses all turned out at the same time as they all settle really well and it means the owners are not under time pressure to get the horses turned out before work. Most of my liveries come up once a day - in teh evening. We have a floodlit school so they ride until late.
If the weather is bad I will bring in and an happy to swap a turnout for a bring in if that suits the owner better.
I bet if you did a poll of people who were on DIY livery, you would find a huge proportion of them worked a 9 - 5 or similar. It's normally very social in the evenings too!
im diy and now have 4 gees (5 until 2 weeks ago, and probably another one to look after for a while from this week) and no probs with working too - if i didnt i wouldnt afford them
2 are grass livery and 2 stabled, you just get really good at using your time efficiently.
when i was working full time AND at college it meant early mornings and sometimes id be riding at 10.30 at night, but its worth it...
I work full time and have a native pony on DIY grass livery, though he comes in two nights a week so I can ride and his legs can dry off.
Basically in the winter I go assisted DIY so get help with turnout bring in and feeding. The horses are fed hay every day in the field at 4pm. If you want to turnout then you have to pay for hay. I get them to bring in on Thursday pm as I have a lesson in the evening and the living out fields are huge and far from the yard so finding him in the dark is not easy and work is over an hour away from the yard. We have large indoor school and 2 floodlit outdoors. He then stays in the night and gets turned out in the morning after he has had bfast. I also take random afternoons and days off work to ride more. So winter is basically not that great in terms of riding manage 3/4 times a week including weekend.
Summer will be me looking after him full time with the light evenings will be easy!
I work 7.30-4.30 and have my horse on DIY. Its not too bad if you have a school with lights over the winter, but we don't so it's been sh*tty this year I also have to work alternate weekends 7.30-10.30 or whenever we finish then 2.30 - 4 so much time at the weekends to ride either. I get by but it is frustrating sometimes.
I have mine on grass livery, although I do pay for a stable in case of emergencies. Once you're used to slumming it, it's a doddle. In the winter I poo pick by head-torch (get a good one, or you'll find yourself walking towards the mole hills!!). I also ride out off-road using a headtorch, flashing vest and red light on the legs (plus the reflectives of course). I wouldn't hesitate to ride in a school also using a headtorch.
It's also much quicker poo-picking than mucking out a stable. Maybe I'm just naff at it, as I've always kept mine out 24/7, but over Christmas I had to stable them and I found it really hard! I'm knackered just reading the above posts, especially the one who says she's at the yard by 05:30. Eek!
