Just wondering really. No yards round me offer it, and have often heard it mentioned on here!

Does it class as DIY livery, but horse living out all the time.

or

Your horse is kept out in a field, gets hay chucked out for it by YO, brief check over visually by YO as hay is getting chucked out

plus use of what ever facilities yard may have?

My two have gone from DIY to grass livery.
I think it varies as mine have hay given daily and are checked by yo whilst she is haying them, there's nine horses that live out. But there is a couple of fields locally where the only requirement is that the horses are checked once or twice weekly

It's as variable as DIY is, OP. You can have 'full grass', 'DIY grass' or somewhere in between. Basically it does mean without a stable. Sometimes you get use of facilities, sometimes not. One place I enquired at didn't even allow use of the tackroom or feed storage!

We did two basic checks a day (basic -owner responsible for more) water, winter feeding, yard had emergency stables, tacking up area, hosing off, vet/farrier areas. Schooling/jumping paddocks. feed rooms, tack room and storage areas.
That was basic grass which most were on. Diy (without winter feeding), part and full (no exercise) were also available.
Stables were not available to rent or to use generally overnight, they were for anyone to use for chucking in short term (while riding another) or overnight/long (medical). Obvious medical was prioritised.

Totally depends on the yard.
Grass livery is our 24/7

Some leave it up to owner to check horse. So its diy.
Others do full grass livery so the yard check and hay horse.

Usually facilities are included if they have them but obviously this would affect the price.

Grass livery here, is basically a field & you get left to your own devices, you check on the horses, sort their water & hay, & see the field owner when your rent is due & is normally around £10 a week, though i do know someone who charges £8 a week.

Same around where I am. Last spring/summer I paid £10 per horse.
I checked the horse daily and so did the YO. Field was around 3 acres with a field shelter.

I had use of an indoor school but had to arrange with the YO (but she didn't like us using it)

I've done grass livery a couple of times but its never been just a basic field. It had stables as an optional extra, lights and electric, running water, automatic water troughs, , tack and feed room, barns for horse's to shelter in and for storage and hard standing on the yard with a grass school and jumps for summer.
Large hay bales were put in the field weekly by the farmer during winter and most yard/field maintenance was done by YO.
Horses lived out in a herd and no one used the stables other than for feeding and grooming or illness.
Cost about £11 p/w in a nice village with a bridleway network.

i offer grass livery. £10 per week per horse.
and thats exactly what it is, a field.
if needed someone could use the stables or barn but its simply turn your horse out and look after it theirself.
automatic water troughs and use of concrete yard to feed, groom, tack up.

nice and simple:cool:

This sounds very reasonable!

Just a field with running water.

I check horse, feed horse, put out hay in winter when required, check water supply is OK, manage the strip grazing in summer, manage the elctric fence that separates the horses from the quarry next door, manage the gateways to avoid poaching.

I also do this for the two (currently three) others who have horses in our herd.

The "yard" is quite a long way away, along a road. We have, in principle, use of a very basic outdoor school. When horse got an abscess a few weeks back, I did take an emergency stable for a couple of weeks, but he wouldn't stay in on his own. There is hard standing and a hose pipe at the yard, but too far, really, for me to be bothered trekking all the way to use them. There are also tack and feed rooms, but the same applies.

I pay £20 a week for this, and I am strongly considering charging the other liveries half of this, since I'm effectively providing a livery service to them, eejit that I am
