Has anyone used the grass protection mats to stop it getting muddy?

they look like honeycomb holes?

I'm thinking of making a small turn out area for my old boy ready for winter as we're on clay and the mud really gets him down.

any experiences good or bad?

I've just bought some for a turnaround area so I can turn the lorry without getting stuck. If it is a turnout area though I'd consider getting the topsoil removed, laying some planings and some sand/rubber, this may be more cost effective in th long run and safer under foot. How big an area do you need?

We are on clay and my old boy has a paddock, which is grass free, as he is a Cushings horse ...

He has a field shelter in a paddock of about 20' x 40' , which s thick with wood chippings (I get this free from the local tree surgeon

). In front of the field shelter I have put four 4' x 6' mats on top of the thick layer and added more wood chip on top of that ...... it just about holds it's own over the winter, however my old boy is very quiet and well behaved, so does not mess it up

I havent decided size wize yet as wanted to see how much its going to cost first. maybe 12m by 9m but thats just a guess.

yes. we used the Fieldguard heavy duty mats in the gateway of a field we rent during the winter (so no prospect of making a permanent entrance) and we were really pleased with them - once one of the horses decided he could walk over them and didn't need to leap!
