My field especially around the stable and water trough are ankle deep in mud. I want to concrete the area next spring but for now I need to do something. I was thinking of grass matting. It looks quite good. But I think I need to put some sort of chipping underneath before I lay the mats. Anyone done this ? If so what material did you put down underneath. Thanks.

Following with interest, this year my gateway is muddy - last year it was not!

I have decided to hardcore before next winter, but I too was wondering if the grass mats could be a quick fix until then.

I suspect they really need to go in before the mud arrives :)

Too late then. Mud already up to ankles. Been so much rain. I really need to know what material to put down first. I know something should as the mats will sink in that mud.

you need to put them down before it is muddy or they will just travel down through the mud they are also incredibly slippery, we had them outside the mobile we lived in for a while an with just human footfall they sunk out of site in just a few weeks and we put them down on top of grass not mud-we lifted and threw the ones that did not sink after we both went head over heels on them in a frost-they were leathal and I would never use them again.

I think I may just suck it up until the spring then have the area hard cored and gravelled and possibly some sort of base that isn't slippery but doesn't get muddy. It's ridiculous how muddy it is, and it's only November. I'm not looking forward to a winter of deep mud, and i'm worried my ponies will get mud fever too :(

A bit to late now it is so muddy but mine are over scalpings and they do a good job. My winter field they were put down before it got muddy and the grass has grown through and they are good. I was worried about them being slippery but even before the grass grew through they were always fine and that was on a slope and with bouncing horses in each hand.

ours were not slippery until there was a frost at which point they were lethal
