I can see this topic has been posted often.

I want to put some grass mats down in front of field shelter and to extend out so I can also put hay hutch on top. So this is to prevent poaching and make it easier to keep tidy! Probably an area around 6x8m. I want to do it know to allow time to settle.

Had a look at fieldguard who do a heavy duty mat.

However just found cowmat.co.uk and they have mats for 12 plus vat which reduces the cost considerable.

Has anybody ordered from cowmat?

Does it make a difference to have either 22mm or 23mm?

If you have put them down did you just put grass seed under?

Any other ideas? :-)

Hi tessah. A few years ago I bought a roll of the heaviest duty stuff from pro-green. It worked reasonably well in front of the water trough but in front of the field shelter it sort of sank. The grass seed that grew into it disappeared as soon as the horses started walking on it.

I think I paid about 400 for it, so it felt a waste of money really. Digging it out and putting stone down works better (although they still drag mud all over it). Good job they're lovable ☺

I have grass mats on top of a membrane, otherwise as has been mentioned, they'll sink. I use a waterproof membrane as the ground really does get bad (spring comes up behind the shelter!), with used bedding underneath (normally aubiose), then membrane, then mats. Once or twice a year I lift the mats and beat them, plus sweep away all the dirt from the membrane. In the summer I lift up the lot and allow the ground to dry out and level off under hooves. I'd love to hardcore it or even use gravel under mats or paving slabs, but yard owner is dead against anything like that.

Forgot to add that inside the shelter I use a permeable membrane, with grass mats followed by stable mats.

I've posted about these mats before and there is a stockist in NI. Huebner Lee based in Germany. They can be laid directly on level grass, don't sink, don't wear out and can even be used under a ménage with sand on top. My pony is currently on one as we speak and it's been down over 10 years and still looks as good as new.

Found the website and they look really good, couldn't find any prices though?

I think they were €11 a mat here but that was quite a while ago. I imagine they would be more in England but only the stockist will be able to give you a definitive answer. Send them an email and see what they say but I can say hand on heart they are a fantastic mat and I've never seen anything to match it in England.
