Hi, has anyone tried using plastic mesh over grass to prevent muddy areas especially around gateways where horses are coming in and out in winter. I Bought 2 rolls which cost over £700.00. I Followed the installation instructions and after giving it time (1 year as advised) for grass to grow through to stabilise it, I started walking hoses over it, almost immediatly the horses feet went straight through it making holes in the mesh, I contacted the supplier horsemat.co.uk based in Suffolk and explained that it was not fit for pupose intended and could they replace it with something more durable, they did'nt want to know and have been trying to fob me off, I am now planning on taking them to court over this matter, has anyone else had had a similar experience with this product or with this supplier, I would appreciate any feedback, thank you

Hi,

That sounds really unfortunate,

I use cellular grass mats to good effect. The only problem we have, if you can call it that, is remebering to loosen them once the ground starts drying, or they get stuck!

Good luck trying to reclaim your money, its very annoying when people mis-describe things, or they are not fit for purpose.

I have 6'x4' grass mats in my gateway and they worked really well during the wet weather and now the ground is drying out its not poached an uneven like the gateways with no mats. I'm pleased with the one I trialled this year and am planning to put them in all gateways/next to water troughs next winter.

I would recommend using cellular paving over a sub-base of MOT Type 1. The cells can then be backfilled with topsoil to allow the grass to go through. This is used very effectively and will take the weight of an articulated lorry with no problem. Great system for gateways and tracks.

Plastic. Its durable, very quick to lay and can take 350 tonnes per square metre of pressure. It must be on a good firm sub-base of Type 1 or equivalent.
