Anyone used them, my girl is so overweight, tried everything but she lives on freash air? Dont know anything about them, so just wondering about opinions???
I use a green guard I love it! I think without it I would have had a much harder battle with Min's wieght since I got him. He only wore it from june to end of october from breakfast til tea time. There are mixed opinions on there use, Dengie have done some research into there effectivenes it is on their website.
The only advice I can give you as a fellow owner of a fatty is restrict intake but provide quality fibre at regular intervals hi-fi lite is good for keeping hungry tummies full, and plenty steady regular exersise.
I have tried the Shires one but it rubbed my girl raw around her chin. If I were to use it agin I would pad it out. I prefer the look of the greenguards.
I have a best friend, its more expensive than a shires mask but much better because its deeper so they can't get it off.
In response to your comment "lives on fresh air" are you sure that your horse is getting enough fibre? I've struggled for almost two years with my mare's weight and am only now getting on top of it. The secret to getting it off has actually been to feed her more. She has gone from just a handful of chaff a day with vitamins to 1kg chaff, 1kg Slim and Healthy and up to 8kg hay every day. What several people told me was that by reducing the amount of fibre your horse is getting you can slow their metabolism and mean that theire body will hold onto its fat reserves. I'm certainly no expert, my advice would be to ring the Dodson and Horrell nutritionists and they will talk you through a whole diet plan. They are really nice, didn't care at all that I didn't feed their brand of food, were quite happy just to help
Another vote for Greenguard here. You need to take the time to fit them correctly but once fitted they work really well, restirct the graising but the horse still gets ample grass. They have no trouble drinking either & mine doesn't rub either. Although the mask will fit to a normal headcollar they actually fit & perform better if you use a greenguard head collar. There is a strap that runs down the nose that assists in supporting the mask that isn't on normal head collars.
Thanks for that, its something I have considered. Ive had her on dengie good doer but I saw little difference. I am just worried incase she ballons over the summer. I was thinking about soaking her hay, but I am going to give the Dodson and Horrell nutritionists a ring too and see what they advise. She is relatively fit but just a bit fat. Thanks for all the advice guys, I'll do a bit more reading and research and think I'll definatly try a grazz muzzel.
