Apologies if you have all discussed these before! Just contemplating ways to save the gateway areas of my fields especially in such wet weather  Has anyone had any experience with these grass mats/ honeycomb mats etc etc. I don't so much want to keep grass at the gate but I'm looking to reduce mud/increase stability as I'm fed up of losing my boots in bog :( Other any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

We have used rubber honeycombe grass mats inside our mobile field shelters and outside to try to combat deep mud. They have worked well in the shelters, forming a firm floor which can be easily cleaned. No so well outside - in front of the shelters the rain run off from the roof created really deep mud which was churned by the horses, also the zip-ties between the individual sheets were broken so the sheets didn't remain level. They were quite difficult to remove once clogged with mud. We're going to have to find another solution for the outside.

Haven't got any experience with mats, but a friend of mine used old carpets in her gateways, a little weird looking at first but once walked on and made dirty it just looked like the ground and it was so firm and made it so easy to walk through! Changed them every few years and the plus side was it totally flattened the ground underneath!

I used mats at my old house in the shelter, on the grass tracks and in gateways. I am currently using them at my new house and wish I'd brought more of them with me. It's too late for me now to buy more and put them down as the ground underneath is already damaged but I find them brilliant.
