Grass Sickness in 6 Year Old, Please Read

I just lost my yealing foal to GS at Liverpool on Saturday
I allowed the phd student to come and take samples from my remaining foal this week
Where are you based?
I am so sorry it's such a cruel disease mu foal looked perfect but had to be pts so cruel

I've been thinking of you lots since reading your post Paddy2012. Is there any more news today?

Still keeping everything crossed for your boy xx

Unfortunatly the results came back and were positive for acute grass sickness.
During the biopsy the vets looked at his intestines and they were quite fully blocked.
Paddy was kept comfortable, and was taken for a walk and a graze before being put to sleep.

Thank you everyone for support, it has been an extremely sad day and a massive shame to lose such an fantastic young horse who had such a gorgeous temperament... I will miss him so much but thanks everyone xx

So so sad to hear your very sad news.:( . You are a brave lady and he knew love. Gentle hugs xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Oh I'm so sorry you lost him... And to the others who've lost their horses to his horrible disease.
Truly heartbreaking, massive hugs to you and your family xxx

This thread broke my heart as I have lost a close friend through grass sickness. I just wish there was more info available on why it occurs and how to prevent it, such as there is with laminitis etc...
Best wishes to you and I hope you recover from this tragic loss.xxx

My heart goes out to you tenfold- my old Arab gelding contracted this and was put to sleep from it. Was a totally undignified and undeserved end for the most noble and brave horse I have ever met, and to my absolute best friend.

I applied for a job with the Equine Grass Sickness fund but didn't get it, but their work is amazing!

Really sorry but sounds like he went as peacefully as possible and not in pain. You done the right and kind thing.

It really is a horrendous illness that not many survive.

God only takes the best from us.

RIP young man x

I have just caught up with this, and I am so sorry to hear the worst. My thoughts are with you at such an awful time for you. He is at peace now, you did all you could for him. Its such a horrible thing. Hugs and thoughts to you xx RIP Paddy xx

I'm so sorry paddy2012, I have only just seen this thread. I am so sorry I wasn't able to offer my support, and so sorry you have now lost him.
What a cruel cruel disease. I am so sorry :( x

So sorry to hear about the loss of your wonderful horse, take great comfort in the knowledge that he did not suffer, he knew you were looking after him and his ending was peaceful with a mouthfull of grass.

You sound like a very brave young lady and i know how much the loss of him will hurt you, remember to lean on your mum for support and there is always this forum, who in times like this pull together to offer warmth & support.

Run free Paddy xx
