As part of my dissertation for my second year of my HND at Guildford College, Merrist Wood campus I’m looking at whether the breed of horse effects the likelihood of getting EGS at whether it effects the prognosis. I would be very grateful if owners with horses/ponies who have suffered from EGS could fill out this brief questionnaire.

What date was the horse diagnosed with EGS?

What was the age and gender of the horse?

What region was the horse was the horse in when it was diagnoses with EGS?

What breed is the horse?

Did the horse suffer from acute/ chronic or sub-chronic EGS?

Did you choose to:
• Euthanize without treatment?
• Euthanize during treatment?
• Euthanize post treatment?
• Or treat it and the horse made a full recovery?

Did the horse live in or out?

I appreciate that some of the information provided in this questionnaire is going to be sensitive to most horse owners. However any information you supply will be strictly confidential. No names will be mention in the study and the information supplied will not be used for any other purpose.

Thank you for your time.

Uniique - there was an article in last month's Scottish & Northern Equestrian magazine - the article was written by Catriona Rowan-- she had some ideas of what causes EGS, but more from personal observation point of view than as a scientist. She had apparently had 8 cases of EGS out of 40 horses owned since the 70's. Anyway, it might be worth trying to contact her - she's had lots of experience that might answer some of your questions.

If this helps this is a link to part of the article on the website

Filly dropped down dead infront of the vet just has he arrived. Just pawed the ground and dropped infront of him PM showed clearly that this was the cause of her death.

Did the horse live in or out? Out 24/7

It was very odd as she was out with her sisters and dam at the time. They were not effected at all I still have her dam and one sister now here with me in Lincolnshire.

Hope this is of some help
