Grass Sickness

Sorry, my router got temperamental!
I haven't seen Fin today because Jack (my boy) is being used for Pony Camp so I had a night off :)
On Sunday Fin poo'd for the first time in nearly two weeks and again yesterday. He is tucking into grated carrots and soaked barley rings and likes Pepper's (my mini shetland) feed so I've donated a bucket of it lol He is still getting the foul smelling discharge from his nose but his breathing is better and since he started getting it he has started eating a bit more. The vet asked his owner not to syringe food incase it went into his lungs so it has been a case of trying to tempt him slowly with little bits and handfuls of this and that. So all in all he is holding his own at the moment. Apparently this is a crucial week for him - week 5 - and if he can get through this week then we have a better chance of pulling him through. I will update again in a few days. Thank you all so much again for your help advice and good wishes xx

Marvelous news x

Hi again Jack Frost - really great news!

Is she managing to get any of that lovely, calorie rich veg oil into him? I guess it is more difficult to make him accept if she has been asked not to syringe...I was suprised at that, as you aren't actually syringing down the neck past the glottis, but into the back of the mouth like a wormer - it either gets spat out or swallowed and therefore doesn't go into the lungs, but I guess if he has lots of nasal discharge, then that might be worrying the vet. The discharge sounds like an extreme version of rhinitus sicca, and is commonly associated with the disease. I would just be slightly concerned that he still might not be getting enough calories in?

Anyway, it does all sound very promising and he is heading the right direction - particularly encouraging that he has pooped - I used to will Gully to pass just one dropping! Keep going Fin!

Hi Just a quicky to say Fin is still holding his own :) He has poo'd every day this week, just the once each day but it is a great improvement on no poo for over 2 weeks. We are now half way through week 5 of this horrible illness and he is eating a little each day, the vet is happy with how he is going so far.
PootlePerkin - yes it is some sort of rhinitis.
Thanks again your continued support everyone :)

Thank you, we need those fingers still crossed, it's a long rocky road from what I understand!
What with the dog needing emergency surgery for pyo on Friday, being up all night with her and my family descending on me yesterday I've only managed to poke my head over Fins door a couple of times in the last 2 days but when I said hello to him yesterday he was nose first in a bucket of feed :D

It is. I've never had an experience of it before and I can quite honestly say I never want to again. It is horrible and gut wrenchingly heartbreaking.

so glad to hear he is still doing ok :) all healing vibes and get well soon wishes being sent to him..x

Much appreciated. Fins not been so good the last two days. He has virtually stopped eating again and although I thought it wasn't possible he has managed to lose some more weight. The vet says this is a critical week and he will have to be assessed at the end of the week to see how he is and decide if it is fair on him to continue. Looking at him last night there is something about his eyes that seems to say, to me atleast, that he is giving up :(

if you can get them to eat anything its a bonus. i know one that would eat cereal with golden syrup and another warm weetabix mushed up.
yoghurt is also a good one.
basically try anything the horse will eat.
good luck and fingers crossed
