Anyone know what the exact symptoms of grass sickness are and if my mare had this could she have got this towards the end of last winter when she dropped so much weight for no reason we could explain. She picked up a bit in weight towards summer but it was hard work to get that on her. She has 24 hour turnout, can come and go from her stable as she wishes, has company of other horses, is rugged on cold / wet nights in spring summer and then all winter. Is feed two feeds per day and has six nets a day of haylage. She had a few weeks there where now and again she was having a problem swallowing her feed but ok grazing. Vet said she lookd dozey as her eye lid was a bit droopy. She'd only been on global herbs 'Stress free' for a couple of months and no other supplements apart from Glucosamine and MSM. She was also a bit colicy at this time too preferring just to stand for a couple of hours afer trying her feed and then going off to graze. Her dung was a bit dark but not hard and is now much more normal. Anyone know if the weight loss could be connected and if this is some form of grass sickness. Vet is unsure. If it is grass sickness in a mild form can anything be done and is the likely prognosis bad or could she get over this.

No, I doubt very much she had Grass Sickness. The symptoms are colic like in that they will roll, but they will show a rapid noticeable drop in weight (hours to a day), running brown water from the nose, wanting to drink but not eat, a stoppage of poo. If it had been Grass Sickness, even the Chonic form, she would have needed long intense nursing to be with you now.
try having a look at th GS website for more help.
