grass very slow?

Our grass is taking an age to come through - I have been resting 2 paddocks now for nearly a month and not much seems to be growing. Some of the horses are looking quite lean so I am still putting hay out - is anyone else finding it the same?
 
Same here (and you're in shropshire as well according to your post?). A couple of the rested fields are doing fairly well but we don't have much at all on those the horses have been on for a while. The field we used all winter is being rested now after being rolled and has some grass starting to sprout up. Never thought I'd hear myself say it but.. we need some rain!!!

I wish I could say my horse was looking lean though! ;-)
 
Hi 'chestnut cob'! Whereabouts in Shrops are you? We are in the South, nr Bishops castle.

I agree we need some rain, but the last time I prayed for it, about 4 weeks ago, it was torrential for a week, churned all the fields up which then had to be re-rolled and harrowed, and those that had been turned out from the beginning of March had to come back in at night!

Grrr...!
 
Same here. It was starting to grow quite well but we haven't had any rain since Good Friday and it's been very warm and windy so the ground is like (rutted) concrete now (I'm on clay :(). I hesitate to say it but could do with a sprinkling of rain . . . . not downpours but a some nice gentle spring rain to help the grass along. I'm still feeding hay and have been since September. I've never known a winter/Spring like it.
 
Yep same here, I posted about this a few days ago. I'm back to feeding hay out in the field as they have already eaten off the 'summer' paddock. My old girl started to lose a bit of condition so I couldnt do anything other than supplement with hay (and a hard feed for her).

Just a little shower and a few milder nights would be great...dont want any more than a shower mind!

Hello *waves*

I'm in Telford, horse is north Shrops, near Hodnet/Mkt Drayton.

I am supposed to be at a HT this weekend but can't see it being much fun if the ground stays this hard. I would be happy with rain overnight then sunny days. My horse is still in at night, only a couple are out, because we just don't have enough grass on the fields they are on to support that many horses yet. However, at least it makes it easier to control his weight...my boy is ALWAYS on a diet! ;-)
 
Ours isn't growing much either (shropshire again). Fields have been harrowed this morning so I really would like a bit of rain on them please. Or more to the point, rain on the part I want to take hay off, but not on the bit where the fatties are grazing, but that might be too much to hope for.:rolleyes:
 
Another fellow shropshirer! apparently we are meant to be getting rain this evening, then lots of sun for the rest of the week. My field is so dry and sparse :(
 
Just off the point - isn't Shropshire fab!! We moved here 3 yrs ago and absolutely love it - the out riding is fantastic, people so friendly, good competition venues, and fun rides every weekend!
Right - I will shut up now....

It has looked like rain all day today but now the clouds are nearly gone and it's sunny. Great that it's nice and warm but we do really need some rain! Even the grass on the hay/haylage field isn't coming through as quick as last year.
 
Spare a thought for us on Lincolnshire clay!! Its gone from mud pit to concrete in 3 weeks.

My two acre "spring" paddocks are about bare, girls are on my other paddock that is usually too lush for them.

Nothing growing yet. :(

Although I'm on sandy soil not clay, I haven't got any grass either...
Cattle still indoors, costing fortune to feed and bed... Sheep fed nuts and hay in fields and horses turned out in dirt paddocks with haylage.
Watching Countryfile forecast last night I felt like strangling the woman - it is a forecast for farmers for crying out loud! Don't you know we need some blinking rain?!!! GRrrr:D
 
I'm desperate for it to rain. My field is so hard underfoot, and really bare of grass. What little is coming through is being eaten by the horses. Have had to put haylage out in the field to supplement them. Am feeding bucket feeds twice a day as well as Magic is looking a little on the lean side. It's really odd weather at the moment, really warm during the day, but temperatures hovering above freezing during the night?! :(
 
Same down here. Our donks and horses are now starting to lose interest in the haylage and nibbling grass, but it's far from adquate yet. I did notice some farmers fields looking long and lush though.
 
How is it the grass in my garden, that *isnt* fertilised is growing really fast, yet the fields that I have rested since October, and fertilised, are bare???!!!

I am still feeding my relative fatties hay at night!!

grrrrr.......
